UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE..
PAUL R. DEA E. DHUMY, OF LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND.
DRIVING-BELT.
SPECIFIGATION' forming part of Letters Patent No. 469,778, dated March 1, 1892.
l Application filed July 20, 1891. Serial No. 400,089. (No model.)
.To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, PAUL RAOUL DE FAU- CHEUX DHUMY, civil engineer, a citizen of the United States, residing at Liverpool, in the county of Lancaster, in the Kingdom of England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Driving-Belts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its Object the construction of belts and wrapping power conductors in such manner as to prevent or re duce the stretching of the leather or other material, to strengthen the belting, and to give a greater grip upon the pulley.
The invention is best described by means of the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective View of my improved belt, and Fig. 2 a View showing a modiication of the same.
Referring now to Fig. l, A is a series of parallel Wires; B, a leather or other light belt; C, transverse strips of leatherl covering the wires and forming the working face of the belt; D, iron', steel, or other staples driven through the two layers of leather clinched at the ends and firmly holding all together. Fig. 2shows a variation of this, in which steel or other bands take the place of Wire and in which there are two main leather belts instead of one.
No broad claim is made herein to the combination of a flexible belt and a metallic sheet or backing.
I am aware that combined metallic and leather belts are old, and I make no broad claim thereto.
I claim as 'my invention- In a driving-belt, the combination, with a metallic band, of a continuous leather strip applied to the rearface and extendingthroughout the length thereof, and a series of transverse leather strips separated one from another and applied to the upper face of the metallic band, all substantially as shown and described.
Intestimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence Of two subscribing witnesses.
P. R. DE F. DHUMY.
