STARTING AND STOPPING MECHANISM FOR MACHINERY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 469,713, dated March 1, 1892.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a partial plan and partial horizontal section of mechanism embodying my improvement. Fig. 2 is a sectional end elevation of the same, taken as indicated by the dotted line x m, Fig. 1. Fig. '3 is a vertical section taken parallel with Fig. 2 and showing the manner of supporting a lever which appears in said figure. Fig. 4 is a side view of the parts shown in Fig.1. Fig. 5 is a face view of one of two parts by which motion is transmitted from a driving-pulley. Fig. 6 is an edge viewof the same.

S is a shaft which transmits motion to the parts of a machine. S is a driving-shaft which transmits motion to said shaft S by means of a gear-wheel S, arranged on the shaft S and a pinion S affixed to the shaft S The gear-wheel S is loosely mounted on the shaft S On the shaft 8 is secured a piece S having three arms 8' 3 8 These arms are not permanently connected with the wheel S but may be connected therewith at any time by means of a pin 3, which is carried by said arms and passes through one of them at such a distance from the center of the shaft S as to be capable of entering one of a number of holes 5 with which the wheel S is provided. It will be seen, therefore, that the piece S may be locked in difierent positions to the wheel S. The advantage of having a number of holes 3 in the wheel S is that the piece S may be engaged with the Wheel after turning but a fraction of a revolution instead of having always to turn round to one part of the wheel before engagement therewith. Preferably the holes 8 are lined with steelbushings. To the arms 5: s of the piece S springs S S are at one end secured in any suitable manneras, for instance, by screws 5 The other ends of the springs S S act upon the pin 8 to This lever, it will be seen, is curved for a distance to be approximately concentric to the shaft S and the portion so curved is provided with two forwardly-extending inclines 3 s Whenever the rotation of the piece S will bring the head or flange s of the pin 8 into proximity to the curved portion of the lever 8, this head or flange will ride along the incline and the extremities of the springs S S will ride along the incline s WVhen this occurs, the incline s will efiect the disengagement of the pin 8 from the wheel 8, and the incline s owing to the fact that it has a somewhat greater projection than the incline 5 will move forward the extremities of the springs S S so as to prevent them from acting upon the head of the pin 3. The advantage of thus acting upon the springs as well as upon'the head of the pin arises from the fact that thus the springs will be prevented from by any possibility pressing the pin inward to any degree before they should actuate the pin. As soon as the pin sis thus disengaged from the wheel S the latter will cease to impart movement to the piece S and consequently to the shaft S. Because of this the operation of the machine comprising the shaft S will cease,
although the driving-shaft S will continue to rotate.
In order to prevent the piece S from moving backward after the disengagement of its 5 pin 3 from the wheel S, I preferably combine with the lever S a detent S for engaging with the arm 8 of said piece S I have shown this detent as consisting of a strip of spring metal att'achedto the lever and constructed to hook over the end of the arm 8. The construction of this detent may be best under stood by reference to Fig. 4. To arrest the continued movement of the piece 8 ,1 preferwith a-screw-threaded lowerend 8 which is passed through a bracket s", fastened to the Thehole;
base portion of the machine-frame. in this bracket through whichsthe end 3 of the lever passes is made flaring from the center toward each end to enable the lever to rock in it toward and from the shaft 8. Above the bracket .is-a ring orwasher of soft rubber s ,;and there-is a similar ring belowthe A belt-gpulley S ds formed integral with or bracket. Washers are appliedto-the topof the rings a-nd bottom of .the ring 8". Nuts .9 are applied to the -screwthreaded end 3 of the 'lever .to bear against these washers. It is intended that thenuts shall hold the rings s e oloselyagainstthe bracket 3 As the lever cannot be oscillated without compressing-some portions of the rings 8 8 these rings-constitutesprings, which tend to maintain the lever with itsend s in anuprightposition. Tllhe tension of the spring -S may be variedbyadj usting the nut s kand ;a nuts upon :a SOIGWflLlliBfid. which is .formed uponthe outer endgportion of the shaft S The fiy-wheel S and driving-pulley S are not intended to have any movement in the direction of the length of 'theshaft S and, as here shown, are prevented from moving away from the outer end of the shaft by having their hubs bear against the hub of the gearwheel of the pinion S A rotary motion will be transmitted fromthe driving-pulley through the ring S to the ring S and thence to the shaft S Owing to the yielding connection of the ring S with the shaft 8, this ring can move toward the outer end of the shaft sufficiently to allow thedriving-pulley S to rotate without imparting any rotary movement 'to the-shaftS in the.event of the machine hecoming blocked or stopped. Thus I provide for obviating breakage which might otherwise ensue upon the blocking or accidental stopping of the machine.
Preferablythe opposite faces .of the rings S S are inclined :and serrated ortoothed. When this is done, the teeth'willrhave a @V shaped cross-section.
The mechanism whereby motion is transmitted to the various .parts of themachine and the stop mechanism for arresting the movementsof said parts-is peculiarly applicable to ashoe-lastingimachine, for which on June 28, 1890, (SerialiNo.,357 ,O80,) 1-filed an application for Letters Patent, but isalsotapplicable. generally to other machines.
What I claim as myinvention, and desire to secure by LettersPatent, is-
1. The combination of ;a-shaft,-a gear-wheel loosely mounted on said shaft and provided in one side with a numberof holes, atriangu- .larpiece aifixed to said'shaft, springs attached at one end to two of the-arms, and :apin carried by the other end of said springs and passing through the third .arm and adapted to engage withone of -;t-he iholesofsaid gear- .whee1,;sub stantial1y as specified.
2. Thecombination of a-shaft, a gear-wheel loosely mounted on said shaft and provided inone side with a number of holes, a piece affixed to said shaft, and springslattachedyat one end to said .piece andgatthe other end .provided with a pin whichpasses through said piece-and is adapted toengage with one of the holes of the gear-wheel, substantially as specified.
3. Fhe combination of a shaft, a; gear-wheel loosely mountedon said shaft and provided in one side with a number of holes,a-piece aifixed to said shaft, a springattached atone end to said .piece,a pin carried by said spring and passing throughlthe piece andconstructed from the gear-wheel and having also a detent for preventing movementofsaid 5piece,, substantially as specified.
4:. The combination of-ashaft, a gear-wlheel loosely mounted on saidshaft and ,provided 1110116 side with a number of holes,a piece aifixed to said shaft, a spring attached-at one "end to said piece, a pin carried by said spring aflixed to said shaft, a spring attached at one end to said'piece, a pin carried by said spring and passing through the piece and constructed to engage with said gear-Wheel, a projection upon said piece, an extended head on the pin, a lever havingacam-surface for acting on the head of the pin to withdraw the pin from the gear-Wheel and having a means for engaging with the said piece, anda spring for permitting a longitudinal movement of the lever, substantially as specified.
6. The combination of a shaft, a gear-wheel loosely mounted on said shaft and provided in one side with a number of holes, a piece affixed to said shaft, a spring attached at one end to said piece, a pin carried by said spring and passing through the piece and constructed to engage with said gear-wheel, a projection upon said piece, an extended head on the pin, a lever having a cam-surface for acting on the head of the pin to withdraw the pin from the gear-Wheel and having a means for engaging with the said piece, a bracket 8 having a hole flaring toward its ends for receiving the end of the lever, springs s s, and nuts 3, substantially as specified.
