GRAHAM. INKSTAND.
No'. 469,042. Patented Feb. 16, 1892.
I76. 9: WITNESSES:
7 /614; N-I-OR UNITED STATES- PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN GRAHAM, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
INKSTAND.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 469,042, dated February 16, 1892.
' Application filed March 9, 1891- Serial No. 384,227- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN GRAHAM, a citizen of the United States,- and a resident of the city and countyof Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Inkstands, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in inkstands; and the object is to furnish an improvement in that class of inkstands the lids of which are automatically opened or closed by lifting a pen-holder from or placing it upon a tray or rack upon the front of the stand.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in which similar letters of reference indicate similar parts throughout the several views, Figure l is a ront elevation of my inkstand; Fig. 2, a side elevation; Fig. 3, a section of Fig. 1 on line 1 2; Fig. 4, a plan of Fig. 1; Fig.5, a front elevation of connecting-rod; Fig. 6, a side elevation of part of tray-carrying lever, showing slot for connecting-rod pin; and Fig. 7, a side elevation of crank carried by shaft which carries the lids.
A is the base of the inkstand, B B inkwells, 0 standards carried by base A, and D D lids for closing tops of ink-wells B B. The lids D D are at their rear ends attached in any suitable manner to a rock-shaft a, which is supported by and free to turn in standards O. In the drawings I have shown this shaft supported by trunnion-screws b, which are carried by the standards 0, this arrangement being used to reduce friction as much as possible.
0 is a crank, preferably entrally located upon rock-shaft a.
cl is a connecting-rod, one end of which is attached to crank c and the other end of which .is attached to a lever e, which is placed inside the base A. The lever e is pivoted at f to a support g, carried by base A. Upon its rear-end is a counter-weight W, and its front end carries a tray or rack h. The holes in crank c and lever 6, through which the coupling-pins which secure the connecting-rod cl to this crank and lever pass, are somewhat larger than the diameter of these pins. The
to allow a certain small movement of the con-' necting-rod when the pen-holder is placed upon or taken off the tray before the connecting-rod operates to raise or lower the lids, so .as to secure the benefit of the momentum of the tray and its connected parts to assist in the work by slightly jarring the crank. For example, if the lids be open and the penholder be placed upon the tray, the tray is lowered by the weight of the pen-holder and the outer end of lever e, which carries the tray is lowered with it, drawing down the connecting-rod d. This rod is drawn down by the lever e, its momentum increasing until the pin 2, which connects it to the crank c, strikes the bottom of slot j in the crank, to which it imparts a jar, which materially assists in the operation of closing the lids. A similar action takes place when the penholder is lifted from the tray. When this is done, the counter-weight Wfalls and the pin it, which connects connecting-rod d to lever e,'and which has until now been resting at the bottom of slot Z in this lever e, is raised and strikes the top of this slot, imparting a jar to connecting-rod d and crank c, which assists the counter-weight IV in lifting the lids D.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent c The combination of the base, the ink-wells, the standards carried by said base, a rockshaft, trunnion-screws carried by said standards and on which said shaft is mounted, lids carried by said rock-shaft, a crank upon said shaft, a slot in this crank, a lever pivoted to a support upon the under side of the base, a slot in this lever, a counter-weight upon the rear of this lever, and a tray upon its front, and a connecting-rod connecting said crank and lever and furnished with pins passing through said slots in said crank and lever, all arranged and operating substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
JOHN GRAHAM.
IVitnesses:
CHRISTOPHER FALLON, CHAS. A. RUTTER.
