NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
\VILLIAM FRANCIS IIYATT, OF BROOKLYN, NE\V YORK.
LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 464,023, dated December 1, 1891.
Application filed June 15, 1891. Serial No- 396,295. (No model.)-
To allruhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IVILLIAM FRANCIS IIYATT, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Locks of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to posts and keys of locks; and it consists in a metal post having guards formed upon it and a key constructed to engage with said post. p
I will describe a lock embodying my improvement, and then point out the novel features in claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a post and key embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the post with the key in place, and Fig. 3 is a top View of the post.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A designates the post, secured at one end to a portion of the lock-case A in any desired manner. This post A is formed of solid metal and has The post and guards may be first formed by the process of drawing, which, however, instead. of providing several independent guards, will form a longitudinal rib. This rib may then have the notches a cut in it, and thus form the independent guards c. There maybe one or more of the guards at, the number beingimmaterial to my invention.
The key B is of flat metal and has notches bin its body portion adapted to pass over the guards at asthe key is revolved around the post.
As a means to keep the key in a position relatively to the axis of the post I provide it with a tang b, which may be extended into a hole (6 in the upper end of the post. Obviously by inserting the tang 1) into the hole a the key may be revolved around the post in such manner that its body portion or lower end will engage with and operate a bolt or tumblers of a lock. 1 I have shown the post as provided at its outer end with a head or flange O, which is notched, as at c, for the passage of the body of the key, andthe key is provided with a notch c, suificiently wide to admit the thickness of the flange 0.
Having described my invention, what I claim is- 1. A lockpost having an outwardly-extending guard or guards thereon for use in com-
