NOSE-RING FOR ANIMALS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.453,940, dated June 9, 1891.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, EDMUND K. REA, of Ovid, Ray county, Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Nose Rings for Animals, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.

My invention relates to improvements in nose-rings for animals; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of-devices, as will be fully described hereinafter in connection with the accompanying drawings, and specially pointed out in the claim, which the drawings of the patent granted to me the 2d day of July, 1889, Serial No. 406,061, over the old form of nose-rings are obvious. Still I find in practice the locking-notches in the same are apt to l'acerate the cartilage, causing unnecessary pain to the animal op- To obviate this difficulty I provide the present invention, in the drawings of which- Figure 1 is a view of the ring embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a View of the ring in its open position. Fig. 3 is a top plan or edge View of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective View.

Similar letters refer to similar parts in all the figures, in which- A represents a ring, consisting of the sections 13 and B, which are hinged together at one end and provided with suitable locking devices at the other. The hinged end of one of the sections is bifurcated or slotted to receive the tongue a on the adjacent end of the other secti0n,and a pivot-pin a passes through the lapping ends, and thereby hinges them together.

The free end of the section B is bifurcated or provided with a slotO to receive the tongue D on the free end of the section B, the said tongue D being beveled from the inner side or thickness of the ring to a point at its outer circumference, said bevel d being adapted to fit snugly upon the inclined or beveled floor c of the slot 0 when the ring is in its closed position.

From the rear end of the tongue I) the ring is beveled outwardly at d to either side edge of the same, the said beveled edges d being adapted to enter and fit snugly against the beveled inner sides 0 of the section of the section B.

Screw-threaded perforations e and e are made through the free ends of the sections B and B, which when closed are in alignment with each other and adapted to be locked or secured together by means of the screw E.

In operation the free end of the section B, being sharpened or beveled to a point, is forced through the cartilage of the nose and enters the slot 0. The ring may be forced still farther, the beveled edges (1' of the tongue D offering but little resistance until in such a position that the screw may be conveniently inserted in the perforations e, e, and 6, thus locking the ring in place, as will be readily understood.

I am aware that prior to myinvention rings made of two sections,the end of one of which enters the end of the other, have been used, and that pins passing through the blunt ends of the said sections have been used for securing them together, and I do not therefore desire to claim such a ring; but

What I do claim is A nose-ring consisting of two hinged sections, one of the said sections having a slot in the outer side of its free end, the end of the said slot being beveled and the opposite section having its free end beveled from its inner face to circumference and being reduced in thickness,forming a tongue, the base of the said tongue being beveled outward toward the sides, and a pin passing through the walls of the said slot and through the body of the said tongue, as described.
