STANDING WASTE AND OVERFLOW PIPE FOR BATH-TUBS, 80C.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 453,308, dated June 2, 1891.

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, MICHAEL T. F. ODoN- NELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Standing Waste and Overflow Pipes for Bath Tubs, Wash Basins, Sinks, &c., of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description,reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which Figures 1 and 2 representin side elevation a device embodying my present improvement, shown, respectively, in its closed and open positions. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line 00 w of Fig. l; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the lower or fixed portion of the device, as will be hereinafter more fully explained.

My invention relates to improvements in the devices known as standing waste and overflow pipes, in which the plug to open and close the discharge-outlet of a bowl or bath-tub is made hollow and carried up to a height sufficient to act as an overflow-pipe when the water in the bowl exceeds a given height. lleretofore these devices have been so constructed as to be likely to be dropped into the bowl or tub when handled, thereby causing damage. Furthermore, they have heretofore been generally guided or supported only by the walls of the outlet itself, and consequently there has been a liability of their being tipped over while the tub or bowl was in use, thereby opening the outlet and unintentionally drawing off the water therefrom.

The object of my present invention is to produce a new and improved construction whereby these and other defects are obviated,

and I have representedin the drawingsastructure embodying my present improvements in the form now best known to me.

In the drawings,A represents a bath-tub having the usual outlet-aperture and wastepipe 0. The standing waste and overflow pipe is shown at D, the lower end of which is adapted to close the outlet of the tub or other vessel. As a convenient means of producing this closure, the lower end of the pipe may be slightly tapered, and a bushing 01 may be set in the outlet, as shown, and tapered on its inner side to correspond with the taper on the pipe, the two surfaces being ground to- Serial No. 232,794. gether in a well-known manner to form a water-tight connection.

I provide a guide or support B to center the pipe with the outlet and to support it against tipping over. This guide may be made circular, as shown, to correspond with the circular form of the pipe. Portions of the guide are cut away to form water-ways. It is shown in the drawings at Fig. 4=as made in one piece with the bushing d, being connected thereto by narrow supports or standards e e, which leave free water-ways f (see Figs. 2 and 4) not likely to become clogged or choked.

In addition to the guide for the pipe D to center and support it relatively to the outletaperture, provision should be made for holding up the pipe when it is desired to open the discharge-outlet and empty the vessel. For this purpose I form between the pipe D and the guide B a connection such that by raising the pipe and turningit itwill be held up by the guide. Sucha connection is shown in the drawings as formed by a pin g, attached to the pipe, and a slot h, made in one of the standards which supports the guide, this slot being notched, as shown at i. The pin g, attached to the pipe, enters this slot. When the pipe is lifted and slightly turned, the pin enters the notch in the slot, and the pipe is thereby held in an elevated position, leaving the discharge-outlet open.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In combination, the pipe D, tapered at its lower end, as described,the bushing d,adapted to fit the outlet-aperture of a tub or bowl and tapered to correspond with the taper of the said pipe, standards 6 c, rising vertically from said bushing, a guide-ring B, carried by said standard and adapted to receive and guide said pipe, a notched slotin one of the said standards, and a pin attached to the lower end of the said pipe and adapted to enter the said slot and notch, whereby the said pipe may be supported when elevated, substantially as set forth.
