WASHING MACHINE.
i i i 1 (No Model.)
UNITED STATES- PATENT OFFICE.
ZACHARIAS IV. SHIELDS, OF HARRING'ION, IVASHINGTON.
WASHING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 451,530, dated May 5, 1891. Application filed October 28, 1890. Serial No. 369,603. (No model.)
vTo all whom t may concern.:
Be it known that I, ZAOHARIAS .W. SHIELDS, a citizen of the United States, residing at lflarrington, in the county of Lincoln and State ot' NVashington, have invented a new and useful Vashing-Machine, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in washin gmach i nes.
The object of the present invention is to simplify and improve the construction ot' the reciprocating rubber washing-machine and to enable the operation of washing to be performed at the expenditure' of comparatively little exertion on the part of the operator.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination'and arrangement ot' parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a washing-machine constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 3 is a similar View taken on the line a: of Fig. 2.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1 designates a washing-machine body or tub which is approximately T-shaped, and which is supported by legs 2, connected by crossbars 3 and 4. The cross-bars 3 have pivotally connected to them the lower ends of oscillating bars 5, which have their upper ends similarly connected with a vibrating or reciprocating rubber-frame 6, carrying a pivoted rubber 7, which acts in conjunction with a stationary hinged rubber S, arranged transversely of the longitudinal portion 9 of the body or tub and extending to the end ot' the side portion or lateral extension 1l. The vibrating frame consists of a handle-bar 12, to
which the oscillating bars 5 are pivoted, and
parallel bars 13, which are provided intermediate of their ends with depending arms 14, and have their ends at one side of the tub connected by the handlebar 12, and their other ends are connected by a rod 15. The rubber 7 is pivoted between the depending arms 14 of the vibrating frame 6, and consists of a pair ot' rollers 16, journaled in side pieces 17, which have their ends connected by end cross-pieceslS, which form with the 21, which is pivoted between the sides of the lateral extension 11 of the body or tub, and the free end has attached to it one end of a rope 22, which passes over a pulley 23 and has its other end attached to a lever 24. The pulley' 23 is journaled in a suitable bracket mounted upon the upper edge of the board, and the lever 2l has one end pivoted to one of the legs 2, and its other end is provided with an adjustabe weight 25, by means of which the pressure exerted by the stationary hinged rubber against the vibrating rubber can be regulated. The end of the tub or body adjacent to the side of the stationary rubber is provided with an inclined board 26, which affords convenient means for attaching a wringer and tohold various articles needed during the operation of washing,
lhe oscillating bars are arranged upon opposite sides of the lateral extension or side portion of the body ortub, and are in no manner inconvenient to or in the way of persons operating the machine, and in use they do not pass beyond the body of the tub.
What I claim is Y In a washing-machine, the combination of the body, the pulley mounted thereon, the stationary rubber having one end hinged and arranged within the body, the lever pivoted at one end, the weight adjust-ably mounted on the lever and adapted to vary the pressure, the rope passing over the pulley and having one end attached to the stationary rubber and the other end connected with the lever, the oscillating bars, and the vibrating frame provided with a pivoted rubber and being pivotally connected to the upper ends of the oscillating bars, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my' own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ZACHARIAS W. SHIEL DS.
