RUNNING-GEAR FO R ROAD-WAGONS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 451,525, dated May 5, 1891.

To ctZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CYRUS IV. SALADEE, of the city of Cleveland, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Running-Gear of Road-IVagons, whereof the following is a specification embodying my invention.
The invention consists of the improved devices and combinations of the several parts constituting the complete structure, as hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the runninggear of a road wagon, omitting the axle and rear terminal ends of springs, on the plan of my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the front spring-platform. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the rear spring-platform; and between the two 1ast-named figures is a plan view of the reach, adapted to connect said platforms. Fig. his a front elevation of the cross-bar uniting the side springs, seen in Fig. 2, showing the springs out off at dotted lines XX, and showing the other parts that connect with said cross-bar; and Fig. 5 is the same View, in part, as Fig. 4:, showing the interposed roller-bearings adapted to support the upper fifth-wheel plate fixed to the bottom of the body.
The primary object of my invention is to connect the rear end of the wagon to the front spring-platform by a reach engaging a fifthwheel device placed in the rear of the front axle, said reach being adapted to maintain said fifth-wheel in its horizontal relation to the bottom of the body by a rearwardly-extended segmentplate or other equivalent bearing, adapted to ride upon a friction or roller bearing supported by said reach, whereby to relieve the bottom frame of said body from the vehicle strain resulting from the usual mode of suspending therefrom, in a stirrup or bracket, said friction or roller bearing adapted to sustain thereon said segmentplate. This latter mode of supporting said segment necessitates aspecial frame-work for the bottom of the body, made disproportionately heavy in relation to the other parts of said frame-work, and which is dispensed with by supporting said friction or roller bearing upon the reach as herein proposed.
The front and rear platforms are separately constructed, and either may be used in the absence of the other, substituting for the one discarded any other well-known structure.
The front platform (seen in Fig. 2) has preferably two side springs obliquely extended from the bottom of the body to the axle. The inner ends of said springs are secured to the opposite ends of the cross-bar D and the rear- Wardly-extended segment-plate B, as at B and B. Said cross-bar D supports the bracket D. (Seen in Figs. 2, at, and 5.) A circular or other fixed plate D forming the top plate of fifth-wheel, is rigidly fixed to the bottom of the body and is supported upon the bracket D ,preferably upon the interposed roller-bearings I I, and a king-bolt E is passed vertically through and uniting all of the parts D, D, and D The cross-bar D is in this instance made, preferably, of a plate of steel-say one and one-fourth by five-sixteenths inch. As a means to vertically sustain the middle portion of said cross-bar and to secure a proper bearing for the upper fixed plate D the bracket D is employed, its elevated middle portion being adapted to engage thempper fixed plate D and its opposite ends are depressed and rigidly secured to the top face of said cross-bar as widely-separated points, thereby serving as abridge-brace to said crossbar.
The segment-plate B is bent, preferably, to semicircular shape, as seen in Fig. 2, its 0pposite ends terminating in eyes through which bolts are passed, as at B B securing it to the cross-bar D. The terminal rear ends of the springs are secured to the segments by bolts passing through attached bearings B B, all as clearly seen in Fig. 2. A reach A, extended from the rear end of the wagon to and engaging theking-bolt E, is employed, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 8. Said reach is vertically reenforced, preferably by a bridge-brace A. (See Fig. 1.) An interposed bracketL is secured between the separated members A and A of said reach, said bracket being adapted to carry the friction or roller bearing 0, upon a transverse bolt L and on which is supported and operated the rear portion of the segment B, as seen in Figs. 1 and 2. The rear end of said reach may be connected to and ICO wholly supported by either the springs of the hind platform or by the rear end of the body, as circumstances may require. If it is to connect directly to the rear platform, as seen in Fig. 3, its terminal rear end rests upon the cross-bar II. If to thehind end of the body, it is bolted to the center sill of the frame, as at S, Fig. 1. In the latter case both the crossbars I1 and H are preferably discarded and the front ends of the side springs are extended to unite with the reach, as indicated by the dotted lines l Figs. 2 and 3, and the body is supported upon loops K, interposed directly between the spring and the side sills of the body. The reach may, if preferred, consist of two separate reaches obliquely extended from the king-bolt to the rear portion of the wagon, as seen in dotted lines A Figs. 2 and 3, and the roller-bearing O suitably secured between them. The rear platform, as shown in Fig. 3, is provided with two cross-bars If and II, connecting the inner ends of side springs extended therefrom to the axle, preferably in an oblique position. To the center portion of these cross-bars the rear end of the reach A and A is secured, as seen in the last-named figure. The cross-bar II in this instance is extended beyond the side springs, and the body is connected therewith by the loops K, as clearly shown in Fig. 1.
\Vithout limiting my claims to the precise arrangements of the several parts shown and described, 1 claim 1. In a road-wagon, the combination, with separatelyconstructed spring-platforms c011- sisting of side springs extended from the body to their respective axles, of a reach adapted to connect said platforms and a fifth-wheel device connecting the rear ends of the springs of the front platform and provided with a rearwardly-extended segment-plate, the latter being supported upon a friction or roller bearing sustained by said reach, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, in a front spring'platform for road-wagons, of a fifth-wheel device adapted to unite the rear ends of side springs extended therefrom to the axle, said device being vertically supported at the rear of the king-bolt upon a friction or roller bearing sustained by a reach extended from the rear of the wagon to said king-bolt, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, in a front spring-platform for road-wagons, of a cross-bar supported upon the inner portions of side springs extended therefrom to the axle, a king-bolt or other equivalent fifth-wheel coupling con.- necting said barto the bottom of the body, and a segment-plate secured to said cross-bar and the terminal rear ends of said springs and rearwardly-supported upon a friction or roller bearing sustained by a reach extended from the -rear portion of the wagon to said king bolt, substantially as set forth.

The combination, in a front spring-platform for road-wagons, of a fifth-wheel device secured to the bottom of the body, and side springs extended therefrom to the axle, the terminal hind ends of said springs being supported by a segment plate rearwardly extended from said lifth'wheel device and sustained by a reach that is bridge-braced and adapted to engage the king-bolt, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination, with a front springplatform, of a reach extended from the rear portion of the wagon to the king-bolt, coupling secured to the bottom of the body, and a roller sustained by said reach and adapted to support a rearwardly-extended segment-plate connected to said platform, substantially as set forth.
0. The combination, in a rear spring-plat form for road-wagons, of side springs extended from the body to the axle, a reach forwardly extended and engaging the king-bolt, the inner terminal ends of said springs being con nected to and suspended from said reach,and a bearing intermediate between the ends of said springs, adapted to connect the latter to the bottom of said body, substantially as set forth.
7. In a road-wagon, the combination, with separately-constructed sprii'lg-platforms, of a reach adapted to engage the king-bolt of the front platform and having its terminal rear end rigidly secured to and suspended from the bottom of the body, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. S. The combination, in a front spring-platform for road-wagons, of a fifth-wheel device secured at the bottom of the body, adapted to maintain the inner ends of side springs extended therefrom to the axle, said device consisting of a cross-bar uniting the springs and engaging the king-bolt, and a rearwardly-extended segment-plate, its opposite ends terminating in an eye through which to vertically and rigidly secure said segments to said crossbar, substantially as set forth.
9. The combination, in a front spring-platform for road-wagons, of a fifth-wheel eonplin g provided with a rearwardly-extended segment-plate, said coupling being secured to the bottom of the body and adapted to maintain the rear ends of side springs extended therefrom and connected to the axle, a fixed upper plate D king-bolt E, and the intermediate roller-bearings I I, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
10. The combination, in a road-wagon, of a reach extended from the rear portion of the wagon and engaging the king-bolt, a bridgebrace A, having its terminal ends rigidly connected to the opposite ends of said reach, and an interposed bracket L, adapted to carry the roller C upon a transverse bolt L substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
11. The combination, in a rear spring-plat form of the character described, of the interposed body-loops K, having their straight portions rigidly secured to the bottom side sills of the body and their downwardly-curvcd IIO ends connected to the cross-bar H, supported separated points, substantially as and for the 10 upon the springs F, substantially as set forth. purpose set forth.
