NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANDREW T. TOMPKINS, OF NEV YORK, N. Y.
DEVICE FOR RETAINING NECKTIES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 450,699, dated April 21, 1891.
Application filed March 10, 1890. Serial No. 343,274. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ANDREW TAX LORTOMP- KINS, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Retaining Neckties, &c., in Position in Use, of which the fol lowing is a description sufficient to enable others to make and use the same.
My improvements relate more especially to devices for retaining neckties, scarfs, &c., in place when used with straight or standing collars, and is designed to prevent the displacement or shifting of the lie or securingband upon and with relation'to the collar.
The invention consists in the special construction and arrangement of parts herein set forth and clai1ned,the distinguishing feature being the re-enforcement of the wire of which the clasp and pin are composed by a plate which holds the middle portions or body of the device rigidly together.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective View of a collar to which a tie is attached by means of my holding device; Fig. 2, an enlarged section through a collar, tie, &c., held together by the device. Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are respectively elevations of three sides of the device.
A is to represent any ordinary form of standup collar.
The band 13 may represent either the band of a cravat or an ordinary tie. The band B is attached to the collar A at one or more points by the use of one or more holders 0, as may suit the convenience of the user. Three holders placed, respectively, at the sides and back of the collar may be used effectively in retaining the band B snugly and evenly in position around the collar, although a single holder at or near the back will be sufficient ordinarily to prevent the raising or displacement of the band.
The holder 0 consists of a back or spine 0, upon one side of which the pin 0 is situated, while upon the other side the collar loop or clamp c is situated.
The device is preferably, thouglnnot necessarily, made mainly from wire suitably tenr pered to give a degree of elasticity sufiicient to enable itto clamp the collar by springpressure. It may be made from a single piece of wire bent into shape.
In Figs. 3, a, and 5 the spine portion of the device is re-en'forced by a plate of metal 0', bent around the parallel portions or spine 0 c of the wire, the pin-catch 0 consisting of a portion of the plate c'flbent over within reach of the end of the pin a, which in this case projects at an angle to the body of the holder 0.
The use of my device will be readily understood. It is secured to the inner side of the neck band or tie B by means of the pin 0, and the lower edge of the collar is then inserted between the spine or lock 0 and the clasp or loop 0 as illustrated in Fig. 2, in which D represents an adjoining portion of the shirt to which the collar is supposed to be attached.
This device not only effectually retains the tie or band in proper position while worn, but also connects the tie and collar temporarily together, so that they are always in position for immediate application and use. The proper relative position of the tie and collar being thus once established is maintained until another collar is to be substituted, and the labor and annoyance of applying the tie are practically avoided, since the collar with the tie attached to it can be as readily secured to the shirt as the collar alone.
hat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As an article of manufacture, a device for holding neck bands or ties on collars, consisting of wire bent to form the pin 0 and clasp 0 the intermediate portion or spine c being re-enforced by a metal plate a, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
ANDREXV T. TOMPKINS.
