NITED STATES BENJAMIN F. LAMl- L OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
FA C E-MAS K.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 450,515, dated April 14, 1891.
Application filed January 13, 1891. Serial No, 377,597. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. LAMB, of Boston,in the countyof Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Face-Masks,of which the following is a description sufficiently'full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which said invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a view illustrating my improved face-mask in use; Fig. 2, a side elevation of the mask detached.
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures of the drawings.
My invention relates especially to a mask or guard for protecting the face, and particularly the eyes, from dust, sleet, or snow in driving; and it consists in certain novel features hereinafter fully set forth and claimed, the object being to producea simpler, cheaper, and more effective device of this character than is now in ordinary use.
The nature of the improvement will be readily understood by all conversant with such matters from the following explanation.
In the drawings, A represents the body of the mask, which is preferably constructed of mica or similar transparent or semi-transparent non-heat-conducting substance. This body portion is constructed of a form suitable to fit the forehead and over the nose of the wearer, and is provided on its edges with a binding d,of cloth or other suitable material.
An elastic strap 71, secured to the ends of the mask, is adapted to be passed over the head of the wearerand support said mask in position on the face.
The mask may be constructed to cover the whole face, if desired, breathing-openings being left for the mouth and nose.
The material from which the body of the mask is formed is sufficiently transparent not to interfere with the sight, and said material being non brittle all danger of injury to the face from a blow onsaid mask is obviated. Moreover, sleet or snow will not cake or stick to the outer surface of the mask, and its non-conducting qualities afford great protection to the face from cold.
The objection to employing glass spectacles or goggles provided with wire screens is obviated by my improvement, such devices being dangerous to use in case of accident, while also partially obstructing the sight of the wearer.
The mica forming the body of the mask may be substituted by any transparent nonbrittle composition which is sufficiently fieX- ible to conform to the shape of the face when in use.
Thin sheets of celluloid or gelatine compound may be employed, if preferred, such possessing sufficient flexibility and transparency for driving purposes, although they lack the nonheat-conducting qualities of mica.
Having thus explained my invention, what I claim is A face-mask comprising a body constructed of flexible transparent water-proof material shaped to cover the eyes and a part or the Whole of the face, a binding of cloth .or similar flexible material, and means for supporting said mask in position on the face, substantially as described.
