Description

L?" STATES VILLIAM FIELD, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
IMPROVED MOSQUlTO-AR.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM FIELD, of the city and county of Providence, and State of Bhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in M osquito-Ba-rs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and exact description of the same, reference being' had to the accompanying drawings, mal;- ing part of this specification, in which- Figure l. is a plan of a bed with my improved mosquito-bar applied. Fig. 2 is a side elevation ofthe same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two tigures.
The object of this invention is to provide a novel and simple expedient to adapt the bar or not to be folded back and retained out of the way when the bed is to be made up for the purpose oi" eXpediting the work; and to this end the invention consists in the employment of a hinged frame in connection with posts, which sustain the weight ot' the frame when turned down for use, and said posts, being provided with loops or catches, also retain it in the vertical position in which it is placed when the bed is to be made up, all as will be hereinafter fully explained.
In the accompanying drawings, A A represent a bedstead, which may be of any desired form; and B B are posts or vertical arms firmly secured at each side of the head A.
D is an oblong rectangular frame hinged or pivoted at bottom to the posts B B, as shown at a ct, and consisting simply of four strips or bars attached together at their ends. The bar or net D covers the frame in the manner shown, and a portion of the net extends downward beta een the pillow or bolster and the head-piece A and effectually prevents the mosquitos from gaining access at this point.
In the upper ends of the posts are apertures, through which pass cords E, whereby the frame D is held in a horizontal, or nearly horizontal, position to support the netting over the head of the sleeper. One end of each cord E is knotted, or has any other suitable provision for preventing it from being drawn through the aperture in the post B by thc weight of the frame C. To facilitate the manipulation of the bed-cloth es, the net D may be rst turned up and folded over at the sides and then rolled into a compact body and deposited upon the frame O while the latter is in position shown in Fig. 2. The frame may be then turned back until it occupies the position indicated by the red lines, and thus retained by hooks or catchers c c, attached to the frame O, and adapted to take into loops c c on the posts B B.
By the above-described simple contrivance the net or bar may be placed entirely out of the way, so that it will not interfere with the work ot' the person whose business it may be to keep the bed-clothes in order.
I am aware that devices resembling mine in some respects have been used for adjusting netting to windows. I therefore do not claim noveltyr in my invention, except as employ ed or adapted for use in combination with a bedstead.
Having thus described my invention, the following is what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
l. A mosquito-bar furnished with a hinged frame, (l, to support the netting over the head of the sleeper or permit it to be folded back, substantially as described.
2. In combination with the frame O, the posts B and hooks c, or other attachments, to support the said frame in its elevated position.
The above specification of my improvement in mosquito-bars signed this 7 th day of September, A. D. 1864.
WM. FIELD.
