H. F. WOOD 8v J. F. YOUNG. HARNESS ATTACHMENT.
No. 458,881. Patented Sept. 1, 1881.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HORACE F. \VOOD AND JOHN F. YOUNG, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
HARNESS ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 458,881, dated September 1, 1891.
Application filed June 1, 1891.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, HORACE F. \VOOD and JOHN F. YOUNG, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harness Attachments; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in guard-chains for thills; and it consists in providing the ends of the thills with ferrules, one of which has permanently fixed thereto a link and chain, while the other is so constructed that a link of special construction can be caused to engage therewith, the whole being intended to provide an ornamental and useful attachment to the ends of thills which will prevent the reins becoming caught in the thills, and which Will also serve to prevent the horses walking out of the thills should the traces become accidentally detached.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of our invention. Fig. 2 is a detail View of one of the ferrules and end link of the chain.
A refers to the ends of the thills or shafts, which are provided with ferrules B and O. The ferrule B is formed With the usual socket and at its end with an outwardly-projecting portion 1), through which the vertical bar of a loop or link d passes, so as to swing in the perforation. This loop or link is also provided with an aperture 6, with which the end link Serial No. 394,776. (No model.)
of the chain D engages, said chain being of sufficient length to reach to the opposite ferrule 0. The ferrule O is provided with the usual socket, and at its end with an outwardlyprojecting portion 0, a space 0' being left, through which the notched portion f of the link E may pass, the vertical bar of said link being of such size that it will turn in the end of the socket to occupy the position shown in Fig. 1, when the parts will be securely connected to each other. It will be observed that by this construction it is necessary to turn the link E at right angles with the ferrule O, and elevate the same when itis desired to separate the parts, and as the normal tendency of the chain D is to hold the link E in the position shown in Fig. 1 it is evident the parts will not become readily detached.
WVe are aware that prior to our invention it has been proposed to provide the ends of the thills or shafts with straps having buckles, and do not, therefore, claim the same broadly; but
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with a pair of thills, a ferrule B, having a chain or flexible connection permanently connected thereto, a ferrule C, having an open eye, and a link E, connected with the flexible connection D and provided with anotchf, whereby said link when turned at right angles with the ferrule can be passed into the open eye, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof we affix oursignatures in presence of two witnesses.
HORACE F. IVOOD. JOHN F. YOUNG.
