Description
(No Model.)
T. G.- NORTHWALL,
WAGON END GATE.
Patented Aug. 18., 1891.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THEODORE GUSTOF NORTHWALL, OF OMAHA, NEBRASKA.
WAGON EN D-GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 458,109, dated August 18, 1891.
Application filed April 20, 1891. Serial No. 389,655. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
NORTHWALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Omaha, in the county of Douglas and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in End- Gates for Vehicles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has relation to improvements in that class of devices known as endgates for vehicles; and it consists in the novel construction of the holding or fastening arms, which form also a locking device for the gate, in combination with eye-plates secured to the body of a vehicle, all as will be hereinafter fully explained, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fully illustrate my invention, in which Figure 1 represents a side view of my device, and Fig. 2 is a rear view of the same.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates the rear portion of a vehicle-body, and B represents the end-gate of the same, all of which are made in the usual manner. To each side of the body A is secured a plate a, the projecting end I) of which is provided with an eye 0 for a purpose presently explained.
0 indicates a rod, oneon each side of the body, and this rod is constructed with a handle portion (1 and a slotted end 9, in the slot f of which the end g of the plate a has its play. This slot extends from the extreme end h of the rod 0 to about the center of the rod, as at 1", and said rod serves the purpose of holding the end-gate in an inclined position, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, the handle serving as a stop for said gate, and when the gate is in a closed position the rods 0 O are arranged in a vertical position, as shown in Fig.- 2, and form keys or fasteners for the gate for holding it closed.
Thus it will be seen from the foregoing description and by reference to the annexed drawings that I construct a combined holding arm or rod for the gate when down and a key or fastener for holding it up or closed all of one piece of metal or other suitable material, and it is simple in construction, easily and quickly operated, durable, and at the THEODORE GUSTOF NORTHWALL.
