UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN H. DE NEUT, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO THE RICHMOND & SEYMOUR MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
LAVATO RY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 457,262, dated August l, 1891. Application filed March 12, 1891. Serial No. 384,798- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN H. DE NEUT, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lavatories, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide a novel dressing-case or analogous article of furniture; and it consists in the features of construction and the combination or arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 shows a front elevation of my invention having the drawer withdrawn from the case, showing the position of the watertank, wash-basin, and toilet-receptacle, also showing the position of the waste-water tank' within the case. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same onlineocw of Fig. 1, the same being a line drawn through the center of the wash-basin and designed to show the position of the wash-basin with reference to the wastewater tank when the drawer iswithdrawn from the case; and Fig. 3 shows a longitudinal sectional view of the drawer containing the washbasin and water-tank raised into position to discharge the water into the wash-basin.
Similar letters and figures refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
1 represents the water-tank, which I prefer to construct rectangular in shape and to place the same in the drawer at one side of the wash-basin, the same being properly hinged at a so as to be turned up into an upright position, as shown in Fig. 3, or to be dropped back into position within the drawer, as shown in Fig. 1. If desired, a spring may be used to facilitate the raising of the tank in order to counterbalance the weight of the water.
2 represents the wash-basin, provided with a suitable discharge at the bottom, whereby the water is discharged from the wash-basin into the tank 5 by means of a flexible pipe 3, which pipe 3 is so connected as to discharge the water from the basin 2 into the tank 5 when the drawer is withdrawn, and also to discharge the drip from the basin into the tank when the drawer is shoved within the case.
7 represents a tube or faucet for discharging the water from the tank 1 into the basin 5. When not in use for discharging the water, this faucet is turned out of the way, so as to lie in close contact with thetank, as shown in Fig. 1.
WVhen my invention is used in connection with a dresser-case, 6 represents the mirrorframe, and 9 the splasher, which splasher is suitably connected to the drawer, so that when the drawer is withdrawn from the case the splasher is raised into the position shownin Fig. 2. When the splasher is lowered so as to cover the basin, and, in fact, the entire top of the drawer which contains the basin, and the drawer is drawn out into the position shown in Fig. 2, it forms a convenient writing-desk or table. V
4 represents the drawer which contains the basin, tank, &c.
10 represents the top of the dressing-case.
WVithin the drawer4= compartments may be provided, as 12, 13, and 15, &c., for the purpose of receiving toilet-soap or other articles which it may be desired to store within the drawer. Other compartments may be provided, if desired, and all of the compartments, as well as the basin and tank, are carried by the drawer, and are uncovered or disclosed by withdrawing thedrawer from the case and again concealed by shoving the drawer into the case.
In front of the compartment containing the water-tank is a door 14, which swings upon hinges in the ordinary manner.
17 17, &c., represent drawers'used for any suitable purpose.
In using my invention as a lavatory the drawer 4 is withdrawn from the case, thereby disclosing the wash-basin, water-tank, &c. The splasher is then raised into the position shown in Fig. 2, and the tank 1 is tilted into the position shown in Fig. 3 until a sufficient quantity of water has been conveyed to the wash-basin. The tank is then lowered into the position shown in Fig. 1, and after using the water is discharged through the pipe 3 into the waste-water tank 5, and the drawer is again shoved into its position within the case. I have more particularly describeda dressmg-case in connection with a lavatory; but it will be evident that any other suitable piece of furniture may be used, and I do not wish to limit my invention to the parts specifically described as a dressing-case.
Having thus described my invention, whatI claim to have invented, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with a case, of a sliding drawer containing a wash-basin, a water-tank hinged to a part of the drawer, sliding therewith into and out of the case, and adapted to
