VEHICLE- HOUND.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 454,930, dated J' une 30, 1891.

Application filed March 27, 1891.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE EEDLE, of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vehicle-Hounds, of which the following isafull, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.

My invention relates to improvements in vehicle hounds and tongues; and it consistsy in the novel arrangement and combination of parts, as will be more fully hereinaftei described, and designated in thev claims.

especially showing the manner and the construction by which the same is attached to the tongue-hounds.

The object of my invention, as willbe more readily hereinafter perceived, is to effect a construction by which the weight occasioned by the draft will not be applied to the tongue or the shafts of the vehicle, as the case may be.

Itis evident in the state of the art to which my invention relates that there are very few or if any constructions wherein the weight occasioned bv the draft is detracted from the tongue or shafts and transmitted to any other part ot' the vehicle.

As my invention especially relates to the tongue-hounds and the tongue, I will limit myself to the description of the same.

Referring to the drawings, l indicates the tongue-hounds, which are secured to the front axle in any Well-known and mechanical manner. Said hounds project in front of the aXle, as shown in Fig. 1, and the front ends of the same are connected together by transverse pieces 2 and 3. To the transverse piece 3 the tongue is secured, and also on said piece the doubletree 4 is mounted and secured in any suitable and mechanical manner. In other words, the doubletree et is mounted on the hounds in place of being mounted on the tongue after the usual construction. It can be readily perceived from this construction that the weight occasioned by the draft is applied to the hounds in place of the tongue.

Having described the tongue-l1ounds,I will now describe the manner in which the tongue 7 is secured to the same. t,

8 indicates right-angular braces, which are preferably constructed as shown in Fig. 2. Between said braces the tongue 7 is interposed and secured in any suitable and mechanical manner, such as by bolts being passed through said braces and said tongue. Said braces 8 are cast or formed, preferably, integrally, and also provided with flanges 9, which pass over the top edges of the tongue 7 and extend around the rear end of the tongue, as can be readily perceived from the inspection of the drawings. Said braces are also provided with projecting arms l0, the same be; ing pivotally secured in any suitable and mechanical manner to the `front face of crossing or transverse piece 3, preferably as shown in the drawings.

It can be readily perceived that in place of securing a tongue to cross-piece 3 I may secure shafts to the saine without departing from the nature of my invention.

Having fully described myinventiou, what I claim is- 1. The combination of a cross-piece, such as 3, secured to the tongue-hounds, adoubletree, such as 4f, mounted on the same, a pin passingv through said doubletreeand into 'said cross-piece, a rod 5, secured to said pin and to the cross-piece 2 of said hounds, a tongue 7, and right-angle braces S, secured to said tongue and also to said cross-piece, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination of the tong ile-hounds l, a tongue 7, and braces S, provided with tian ges 9, and arms 10, pivotally secured to said hounds, substantially as set forth.

3. The herein-described brace for wagontongues, provided with a iiange 0 and arm l0, the same being cast or formedintegrally,substantially as set forth.
