E. C. TEGKTONIUS. BROADCAST SEED SOWER.
Nrrn STAT-ns Erica,
EMIL C. TECKTONIUS, OI" RACINE, IVISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR TO 'IHE RACINE MALLEABLE AND VROUGHT IRON COMPANY, ,OF SAME PLACE.
BROADCAST SEED-SOWER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 443,926, dated December 30, 1890.
Application filed August 7, 1890. Serial No. 361,318. (No model.)
.To @ZZ whom, it may concern:
Beit known that I, EMIL C. TncKToNIUs, of Racine, in the county of Racine, andin the State of visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Broadcast Seed-Sowers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to what are known as broadcast see-ders; and my invention consists in certain peculiar and novel features of construction and arrangement, as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a view of my improved seeder, partly in plan and partly in horizontal section, on the line l l of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same on the line 2 2 of Fig. l. Fig. Sisa plan view ofthe same. Fig. LL is a sectional view on the line a 4 of Fig. 1, showing one of the attaching` devices for the seeder.
The objects of my invention are to produce a seeder which shall automatically free the seed from straws, sticks, or similar foreign substances, and thus cast the seed in such freed condition; also, to provide means for quickly and effectively regulating the quantity of seed thrown out of t-he machine, and, finally, to simplify and `generally improve the construction of this class of seeders.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the supporting plate or frame of the seedcr, said plate having at one end a downwardly-extending iiange a, by means of which the seeder is bolted or otherwise attached to the end-gate of a wagon. This frame A is also formed with a central opening a and at the margin of said opening with a continuous downwardly-convergent flange I3.
Upon the plate A is placed a second plate C, which is formed on its under side with a continuous flange c to rest within the margin of opening a. The edge of this plate C rests upon the plate A beyond the margin of its opening a', and said plate C is secured in position by two or more clamping-screws d, each of which passes vertically through the inner end of a strap D, which latter is bolted or otherwise similarly secured, as at d', to the plate A1 The lower ends of screws d impinge upon the plate C, and when it is desired to vary the direction of feed through the dis-4 charge-opening c ofthe plate C the screws are loosened and the plate C is turned horizontally, after which the screws are tightened again. Upon this plate C rests a casing E, which is secured to the plate C by bolts e, passed vertically through lugs e of said casing and also through the said plate C, and upon this casing rests a hopper or chute F.
At one side the casing E is formed with an offset G, having a vertical slot g in its segmental outer wall, and within this offset is pivoted at h h a horizontal gate II, which is preferably V-shaped in cross-section. A segmental arm h extends outward from the upper end of this gate, and at its outer end carries a screw-threaded stem h2, which extends through the slot g and carries a clampingnut h3. Thus by moving the outer end of arm 71, upward or downward in the slot the position of the gate I-I will be varied and the quantity of seed thrown out of the feed-opening c' will be correspondingly varied, as indicated by the index h4 on the stem h2 and the scale g on the offset Gr.
The plate C is formed on its outer side with a downwardly-extending hub I, through which extends a vertical shaft J, the lower end of which is suitably geared to driving-connections of the usual or any preferred form, so as to impart rotary movement to the shaft. At its upper end this shaft carries the strawcatcher K, which works above the pan E of casing E. Immediately below this strawcatcher the shaft .I carries the force-feed wheel L. The arms m of this wheel are of segmental form and have a tightly-closed top 'In' of dish form. At its lower' portion the shaft J carries the distributer N, and the operation is as follows: As the shaft J revolves, the seed which falls through the opening E2 in pan E is caught by the arms m of the wheel L, andI at the same time the arms of the strawcatcher sweep sticks, straws, or similar objects on the dish-shaped top nt of feed-wheel L, where it piles up above the top of shaft J. rIhe feed-wheel now forces the seed past the gate I-I and out through the feed-opening c', from which it is guided by the oppositely-inclined surfaces c2 c2 and falls valong the con- IOO verging flange B to the distributer N, by which it is broadcast. Thus it will be seen that a rapid and effectual separation is effected by the machine, and that the latter is of simple and durable form and construction.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a seeding-machine, the combination,
with a revoluble shaft, of a straw-catcher carried by said shaft and a feed-wheel carried also by said shaft and located beneath the straw-catcher and provided with a closed top, substantially as set forth.
2. In a seedingmachine, a base-plate having a downwardly convergent continuous Harige, in combination With a plate having a feed-opening and set adjustably upon said base-plate, substantially as set forth.
In a seeding-machine, the combination, with a seed-casing and a revoluble shaft, of a straw-catcher secured to the upper part of said shaft and revolving withinthe upper portion of said casing, substantially as set forth.
4. In a seeding-machine, a base-plate provided With an integral flange serving as the means for attaching the machine to a vehicle, substantially as set forth.
In testimony thatI claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand, at Racine, in the county of Racine and Stateof Tisoonsim in the presence of two witnesses.
EMIL C. TECKTONIUS.
