TYPE-WRITER CABINET.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 442,658, dated December 16, 1890.

Be it known that I, MELVIN BANCROFT, of lVhitesborough, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type Writer Cabinets; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in type-writer cases.

In the drawings,whieh accompany and form a part of this specification, and in which like figures of reference refer to like parts in the several figures, Figure 1 shows a front elev'a tion of my case open. Fig. 2 shows a section on line A B of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 shows a section on the same line, the case being closed. Figs. 4: and 5 are detail figures hereinafter more fully explained.

Referring more specifically to the referencenumerals, 1 indicates the case, which has a well determined by sides 2 2upon either side thereof and back wall I of the case.

4 is the cover of the well, and consists of sections 4 and 4 hinged to each other and to the case at 5.

3 is a movable platform adapted to carry the type-writer or any other mechanism to be inclosed in the case, and is pivoted at (3 at the rear end to one extremity of arm 7, which arm is pivoted to the walls of the case at 8, and is provided with a spring 9, coiled about and secured at the pivotal point 8 to the walls of the case and engaging in arm 7, and strained so as to have a tendency to turn the arm upward from the position shown in Fig. 3 toward that shown in Fig. 2.

A shelf-stop 12 is provided, projecting into the well from the back of the case and adapted to support the inner end of the platform when the same is inclosed within the case. Proj ections or studs 10 are provided, secured to the walls of the case and adapted to support the platform when in its forward position, as shown in Fig. 2, the studs 10 engaging the Serial N0.3l9,753. platform in the cutaway or recess 11 therein, (see Fig. 4B,) and thereby preventing lateraldisplacement while the same is in use. I preferably provide two arms 7one upon each wall, and engaging the platform at each rear corneralthough it is evident that one arm might be made to answer the purpose.

My case is used or operated (the platform and mechanism mounted thereon being inclosed in the case) in the position shown in Fig. 3, and it being desired to bring the same into position for use, cover 4 is raised, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 3, and the platform is moved or allowed to move forward and into the position shown in Fig.2 upon the projections 10, the inner end passing upward and forward, and carried by arms 7. The sections of the cover 4 are then allowed to fold and close, the section a passing into position be hind the inner end of the platform, as shown in Fig. 2, the movement of the cover being shown in dotted llnes in the same figure. To inclose the platform, the cover is raised into the posit-ion indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 3, and the outer end of the platform is slightly raised to disengage the same from the-stops or projections 10, and is then pushed backward into the case, the platform sliding on the stops 10 until it has turned downward into the case far enough for the bottom of the platform to come in contact with the pivoted end of arm 7 when the platform tilts orswings over until the inner end rests upon shelf-stop 12 and the outer end is slightly raised from the stopslO. The coveris then allowed to close in the position shown in full lines in Fig. 3. It will be observed that the pivotal point 8 is substantially in line between the support 10 and the shelf-stop 12. It is evident that as the pivotal end of the arm is enlarged this point can be removed from this line, and the device will act the same with these variations within certain limits.

It will be observed that by my combination of platform and stop-shelf the mechanism is entirely inclosed both from above and below when the case is closed, and that when open the top of the case is entirely closed. It is evident that a movable'carriage for the mechanism might be provided upon the surface of the platform 3,- that a rod or roller extending entirely across the well might be provided in lieu of stops 10, and that other alterations, modifications, and variations in and from the construction shown might be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or the equivalents of my construction.

I do not claim a type-writer cabinet having a well with a support in the front of the well, a table resting and sliding over the support, and intermediate connection between the rear end of. the table and the back of the cabinet and hinged to the rear end of the table and to the back of the cabinet and swinging from a substantially horizontal position when the cabinet is opened to a substantially perpendicular and parallel position with the back when the cabinet and table are closed.

hat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination, in a type-writer cabinet having a well, of the movable platform, the swinging arms pivoted to the inner end of the platform and to the walls of the well, the support upon the walls in the front of the well,which support the plat form,andthe shelfstop adapted to support the inner end of the platform, the pivotal point of the arm to the case being arranged so that the platform will tilt over the pivotal point of the arm as it nearly reaches its closed position, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination, in a type-writer cabinet having a well, of the movable platform, the swinging arm pivoted to the inner end of the platform and to the walls of the case below the platform, the spring engaging the arm and operating to swing the arm upward and forward, theshelf-stop for the inner end of the platform, the support at the front of the case, over which the platform moves and on which it is supported steadily by the swinging arm, and the recess or notch in the platform'for engaging the support at the front and preventing lateral movement thereon, substantially as set forth.

3. The combination, in a type-writer cabinet having a Well, of a support in the front of the well, a shelf-stop in the rear of the well, a swinging arm pivoted to the walls of the well substantiallyin line between the support and the shelf-stop, and a sliding tilting platform pivoted at its inner end to the free ends of the arm and adapted to tilt over the pivotal point of the arm, substantially as set forth.

4:. The combination, in a type-writer cabinet having a well, of a hinged cover for the well, a support in the front of the well, a shelf-stopin the rear, an upwardly-swinging arm pivoted to the walls of the well, a movable platform pivoted at its inner end to the free end of the arm and adapted to be supported in its forward position by the support in the front of the well, steadied thereon by the swinging arm, and the spring for operating the swinging arm, substantially as set forth.

5. The combination, in a type-writer cabinet having a well, of the hinged cover for the well, composed of sections 4 and at, the support 10 in the front of the well, the shelfstop 12 in the rear of the well, the movable platform 3, sliding and tilting over and supported on support 10, the swinging arm 7, hinged to the inner end of the platform and pivoted at 8 to the walls of the case, and the spring 9 for actuating the arm, substantially as set forth.

The combination, in a type-writer cabinet having a Well, of a cover for the well, the support 10 in the front of the well, a swinging arm 7, pivoted at 8 to the walls of the case, a movable platform 3, hinged at its inner end to the arm 7 and sliding and tilting on and supported by support 10, steadied thereon by arm 7, and the spring for actuating the arm, substantially as set forth.
