UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES VINCENT KIERNAN AND THEODORE F. MOORE, OF NORFOLK, VIRGINIA.
MEA'suRlNe-VESSEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 441,960, dated December 2, 1890.
Application filed August 9, 1890. Serial No. 361,517. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, J AMES VINCENT KIER- NAN and THEODORE F. MOORE, citizens of the United States, and residents of Norfolk, in the county of Norfolk and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Covered Measures and Funnels; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make anduse the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l of the drawings is a side View showing the funnel with the measure. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the measure. Fig. 3 is a view of the funnel, partly in section.
This invention relates to covered measures and funnels; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates a measure provided with the cover B, hinged near the handle C. This cover is provided with a central opening surrounded by an upwardly-tapering hollow frustum D, which may be struck up from the blank forming the cover or soldered thereto. The object of this hollow frustum' is to receive the tapered end of a funnel when the latter is not in use, thus permitting molasses, oil, or other like substances to drain into the measure, which thus serves the purpose of a drip-cup as well as a rest for the funnel; also, the said frustum serves the purpose of a thumb-piece when `raising the cover. A cap e is provided for covering the raised opening or trust-um when the measure is not in use. The funnel A is constructed with a cover hinged to a shelf h, soldered to its rim, and is provided on its upper surface with a thumb-piece o for convenience in raising the cover, a handle d being provided just in the rear ot' the shelf b. It will be readily perceived that this covered measure, with its raised opening or funnelrest, presents every convenience for the preservation of cleanliness about the barrel from which the article is drawn, as after use the funnel may be immediately transferred to the opening in the top of the measure, which receives all the dri ppin gs, thus protecting the floor and preserving the drippings at the same time.
Having described this invention, whatwe claim is- A covered measure for liquids, having a hinged cover provided with a raised opening or hollow frustum for receiving the small end of a funnel, by which means the latter is retained and allowed to drain into the Ineasure, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
