Description
PATENT OFFICE.
MELBOURNE C. BURR, OF
NEW ALBANY, INDIANA.
IMPROVED SCRUBBER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 44, M20, dated September 13, 1&64.
To all whom, it may concern:
Beit known that l, MELBOURNE C. BURR, of New Albany, in the county ot' Floyd and State of Indiana, have invented a new and Improved Scrubber; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference' being' had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l represents a perspective view of my invention Fig. 2, a transverse section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
This invention consists in a novel and improved manner of applying` india-rubber to the head of the scrubber, as hereinafter fully shown and described, whereby the scrubber is rendered far more efficient than hitherto, as hereinafter set forth.
A represents what may be termed the head of the scrubber7 which may be of wood of cylindrical form, and has/,a groove, a, made longi` tudinally in it, extending its whole length.
B represents a piece of india rubber, which is doubled or folded and secured in the groove to by a wooden strip, b, which is placed between the folds of the rubber and driven into said groove, the strip b fitting snugly in the groove and firmly securing the rubber therein. The groove a is of' such a width as to admit of l aspaee of requisite width being between the two sides or ends of the rubber, the latter extending down some distance below the head A, as shown in both figures. The head A is provided with a handle, C, which may be of any suitable length. By this arrangement it will beseen that the scrubber is provided with two working-edges, dd, formed by the doubling or folding of the rubber, and the space between said edges admits of the water passing between them, thereby rendering the de` vice very eicientin its operation, far more so than it' a single strip of rubber were employed. When the rubber becomes worn by use, it may readily be removed and replaced by anew piece. The head A may be of any suitable dimensions.
This implement has been practically tested and answers an excellent purpose, surpassing those now in general use.
I do notclaim, broadl y, lthe use of india-rubber for scrubbing 5 but l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As an improved article of manufacture, a scrubber provided with a strip of india-rubber secured to it, in the manner substantially as herein set forth.
MELBOURNE C. BURR.
