Description
N Model.) L. S. SLEY,
SEAT LOCK.
No. 440,171. Patented Nov. 11,1890.
WjTNESSES.
NITED STATES ATENT FFICEe SEAT-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 440,171, dated November 11, 1890.
Application filed March 1 7, 1 8 90.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LYMAN SMITH LINDsLEY, of Pratts Hollow, in the county of Madison and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Seat-Fastening Devices for Vehicles; andI do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in devices for securing awagon or sleigh seat and to brace the box, hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In the drawings which accompanyand form a part of this specification, and in which similar letters and figures of reference refer to like parts in the several figures, Figure 1 shows an end view of a seat and the upper edge of the box and my device for securing the seat to the box, as seen from the outside. Fig. 2 shows a rear view of the seat and a section of the box. Fig. 8 shows an inside View of a portion of the box and seat and my fastening device thereon. Fig. 4 shows a portion of the end of the seat and a recess for receiving the clamping-nut. Fig. 5 shows a modified form of the same form as that shown in Fig. 4. Fig. 6 shows a clamping-nut and crank-bolt used in my device. Fig. 7 shows an end view of the same form shown in Fig. 6. Figs. 8, 9, and 10 show modified forms of construction.
Referring more specifically to the referencenumerals marked on the drawings, 1 indicates the seat.
2 indicates a portion of the box of a wagon or sleigh or similar vehicle. Inside of the box is usually provided a projecting rail 3, on which the seat 1 is supported. Hinged to the inside of the supporting portion of the seat at 5, I provide a hook 4. The hook is adapted to engage on the under side of rail 3, and is provided with slotted opening 6. A not 7 is provided, having ashoulder 8, adapted to engage on the edge of box 2, the nut being provided with an internal screw-threaded opening adapted to receive bolt 9, which is provided with a crank end 10. The inner side Serial No. 344,113. (No model.)
of the nut is provided with projections or ir regular in form, substantially as shown at 11 in Fig. 6, adapted to enter a correspondinglyformed recess 12 in the seat, and prevent the rotation of the nut 7 and hold it substantially in the position shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 6, with the shoulder downward in position to engage the edge of the box. On the shoulder 8 may be provided a leather or elastic facing to prevent marring.
In Figs. 5, 8, 9, and 10 is shown a modified form of construction,in which the bolt portion is connected to the hook or shoulder 8, and the nut is provided on the crank-arm 10, the recess 12 being adapted to receive the shank of the hook 7 and prevent rotation thereof.
In the modified forms of construction shown in Figs. 8, 9, and 10 the nut, in addition to the crank for operating the same, may be provided with projections cow, and in the hook the opening 6 will be provided with corresponding cut-away portions to permit the passage of the nut and arm through the opening when in proper position, as will be readily understood from Fig. 10.
The operation of the device is as follows: When it is desired to place the seat upon the wagon or vehicle, the hook t is swung inward, substantially as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2. The seat may then be placed in position, and the crank 10 being turned upward to coincide with slot .6 in hook, the hook 4 is then swung into the position shown in full lines in Figs. 2 and 3, the crank 10 passing through the slotted opening 6. is then turned a sufficient number of times to bind, by the action of the screw 9, the shoulder 8 of nut 7 against the side of the box and secure the seat to the same. The crank-arm 10 being left in the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, or swung to aposition below a horizontal line through the bolt 9, any jar or loosening of the parts will have the tendency to cause arm 10 to swing into its lowest position, in which the hook 4 is always secured, and all danger of the seat becoming unsecured is obviated.
In reference to the modified form of construction the action is substantially the same, the variation with regard to the screw being merely one of construction and not of princi- The arm 10 ple, and with reference to the projections 06 as they determine exactly the position that the crank-arm must assume before thehook 4 can become disengaged.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination,in a seat-fastening device, of a nut having a shoulder adapted to engage the side of the box, a bolt passing through the walls of the seat and engaging in the nut, the bolt having a crank formed therein and the hook hinged to the seat adapted to engage the box, and the hook having a slotted opening for the reception or passage of the crank, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, in a seat-fastening device, of the seat, the box, the nut 7, having a shoulder adapted to engage on the box, a crank-bolt 9, passing through the walls or support of the seat and screw-threaded to engage in the nut, the hook hinged to the seat and adapted to engage the box, and having a slotted opening suitable for the passage of the crank of the bolt, substantially as set forth.
3. The seat-fastening device having a shoulder-nut 7 ,a crank-bo1t9, and hook 4, having a slotted opening 6, adapted to permit the passage of the crank of the bolt, substantially as set forth.
4. Aseat-fastening device havinga shouldercarrying piece, the shoulder adapted to engage the side of the box, a screw-threaded connection between the crank and shouldercarrying piece, the hook hinged to the seat adapted to engage the box, and having a slotted opening to permit the passage of the crank when in certain position, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination of the seat, a box, a shoulder-carrying piece, the shoulder being adapted to engage on the side of the box, a recess in the seat adapted to receive the portion of the shoulder-carrying piece and prevent rotation thereof, a crank, a screw-thread ed connection between the crank and shoulder-carrying piece, the hook hinged to the seat and adapted to engage under the seatsupporting rim of the box, the hook having an opening adapted to permit passage of the crank when in certain position, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
