Description

SAMUEL M. RICHARDSON, UF NEWT 'YR-K, Il. Y.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. lilritlf't, dated November 8, 1864.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL M. Brennan- SON, of the city and State of N ew York, have invented, made, and applied to use a certain new and useful Improvement in Rim-Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this speciiication, wherein- Iligure lis an elevation of my lock with the cap-plate removed, and Fig". 2 is a horizontal section at the line a' a' of Fig. 1.
Similar letters denote the same parts.
Mortise-locks have heretofore been `made with a reversible latch that could be adapted to a door closing in either direction, and rimlocks have been made with both faces alike,
so as to be placed on the door with either side outward, and provided with a lever-latch taking' an incline on the nosing.
The nature ot' my said invention consists iu an interior plate that holds the parts of the lock together, but allows the latch to be reversed, in combination with a cap-plate that covers the lock and renders both sides alike, so that the lock can be placed upon the door either side outward.
In the drawings, a is the box of the lock, l) the keyhole, c the bolts, d the tumbler. e is the tumbler or hub, with the projections or horns acting upon the lever j', to which the the latch is applied.
The foregoing parts may be of any desired size or character.
rlhe latch-slide g connects to the end off,
and slides between supports or studs h It, and
to bring` the inclined end in either direction7 as required. rIhe hub e is held in position by the inner plate, l, secured by a screw, m, which plate, while holding the parts of the lock properly in place, allows the latch to be reversed, because said plate does not extend over the whole ofthe lock.V
To cover up the parts ofthe lock and make the faces look alike, so that either side can he outward on the door, I employ the plate n', secured by a screw at 0 and carrying a stud, p, which is contiguous to the latch k, and holds it properly, so that it will not come olf the pin inutil this plate 'n is unscrewed and removed.
By this mode of construction the rim-lock is adapted to either side of the door and to left or right handed doors, and the ordinary nosing is to be employed.
Having thus described my said improvement, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
rlhe plate l to hold the parts of the lock in position, in combination with the reversible latch and the cap-plate a, as set forth.
In witness whereof l have hereunto set my signature this 15th of July, 1864:.
S. lll. RICHARDSON.
