CONVERTIBLE MOP AND BRUSH.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 449,658, dated April '7, 1891. Application filed June 3, 1890. Serial No. 354,110. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be itknown that I, WILLIAM HENRY BAG- BY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Waco, in the county of McLennan and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Convertible Mops and Brushes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention pertains to an improved convertible mop and brush, having for its object the combination, in a single device, of a brush, a mop, a mop-wringer, anda fountainhandle; and the invention comprises the detail construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, substantially as hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanyingdrawings, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of my invention, the fountain-handle being partially in sect-ion. Fig. 2 is a similar View with the brush removed. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the mop extended through its wringer. Fig. 4 is a view of the wringer-frame, showing the rollers in dotted lines.

Referring to the drawings, A designates the brush, in a groove of the front edge of which is placed a rubber st rip a. a is atwopart hinge secured to top of brush A and provided with a central slot a B is the fountain-handle,havinganoutlet or opening I), a supply-opening b, and a valve b operated by a rod b having an outer handle or ring 12 by which the valve is operated. A bail or handle 19 is secured to the outer end of the fountain-handle. The lower reduced end of the fountain-handle B is secured in a ferrule b of a bail or frame 0, having a lower vertical or angular portion cl, carrying a thumbscrew d, which is projected through slot a of hinge a. By tightening. this screw the brush is firmly secured to the bail or frame 0. A rubber strip d is also secured to the lower edge of the angular portion (1 of frame 0.

D is the wringer, whose frame 6 is pivotally mounted at its ends in frame 0, so as to be free to revolve therein. The wringer comprises two rollers E E, the former being journaled in frame 6 and the latter having its end journals projected through slots 6 of said frame and secured to the side arms of a tension-spring F. This spring is connected by a central thumb-screw f to frame 6, so as to regulate the tension on roller e. The mop O, when not in use, is wound around the wringerframe, and its ends are provided with loops g for engagement with a hook g of frame (J when in use and a hook g of handle B when extended between the wringer-rollers.

In practice the fountain-handle is first supplied with water, which is permitted to escape through the outletopening by operating valve b In this manner water is supplied. to the floor, after which the same can be scrubbed by brush A and by removing the latter the mop can be brought into use and the Water and dirt readily mopped from the floor. By passing one end of the mop between the rollers and drawing the same there 7 5 through the contents of the mop is readily removed, and the same will quickly dry by being extended and secured at its outer end, as shown.

I claim as my invention 1. The combination of the brush having a slotted hinge, and the fountain-handle having the bail or frame provided with a thumbscrew for connecting said brush and handle, substantially as set forth. 8

2. The combination of the fountain-handle, the bail or frame, the mop-wringer secured therein, and the mop, substantially as set forth.

3. The combination of the fountain-handle having a bail or frame provided with a hook, the mop-wringer journaled in said bail or frame, and the mop having loops or rings at its ends to engage said hook, substantially as set forth.
