PISTON METER.
No. 449,617. Patented Mar. 31, 1891.
yl'mwz JOHN B. DEEDS, OF TERRE l'lAU' E, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALE TO FRED. J. BIEL, ,OF SAME PLACE.
PISTOTN METER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 449,617, dated March 31, 1891.
Application filed December 13, 1890. Serial No. 374,621. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN B. DEEDs,a citizen of the United States, residing at Terre Haute, in the county of Vigo and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Meters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates tometers; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Meters constructed according to this in vention are adapted for measuring water, oil, and other liquids, and are adapted to be used in connection with engines and pumps.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of the meter, showing the cylinder partly in section. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the meter from below, showing the valve-chambers in section.
A is a horizontal cylinder, provided with a piston to and a piston-rod a, which passes through a stuffing-box 2.
B are adjustable collars or tappets secured to the piston-rod by the screws 1) for working the inlet and outlet valves.
0 is the inlet-valve chamber, provided with the inlet-opening c and the ports 0, connecting the ends of the chamber direct with the same ends of the cylinder A.
D is the inlet-valve, which works back and forth in the chamber 0, past the opening a, and d is the inlet-valve rod, which passes out of the chamber C through the stuffing-box d.
E is the outlet-valve chamber, provided with the outlet opening 6 and the ports 6', which are curved in opposite directions and connect the ends of the chamber with the opposite ends of the cylinder A.
y F is the outlet-valve, which works back and forth in the chamber E past the opening e, and f is the outlet-valve rod, which passes out of the chamber E through the stuffingbox f.
The ends 3 of the rods (1 and f are screwthreaded and are provided with nuts 4, by which the said rods are secured to the crosshead G, and the said nuts are adapted to be turned to adjustthe position of the two valves with respect to each other. A plate 9 is se cured to the cross head between the two valverods, and g is a longitudinal slot in the said plate.
H is an oscillatory shaft journaled in the brackets h, secured to the front cover of the cylinder, and h isa lever secured to the said shaft. The upperend of the lever 7t engages with the tappets on the piston-rod, and the lower end engages with the slotg in the cross head.
I is an arm projecting upwardly from the shaft II, and i is a heavy weight secured to the said arm.
J is a forked bracket secured to the shaft H and provided with the stops j, which are adapted to strike against one of the brackets h, and thereby to limit the extent of the 0scillations of the said shaft.
The operation of the device is as follows: The water or other liquid enters the opening 0, passes into the rear end of the cylinder, and drives forward the piston. The water upon the other side of the piston escapes by the port e and opening 6. The valves D and F'both being drawn forward in their chambers, the water cannot pass from the opening 0 t0 the front end of the cylinder, nor pass out from the rear end of the cylinder by the port e, which communicates with that end. \Vhen the piston approaches the front end of the cylinder, the rear collar strikes the upper When the weight I: has been moved over the center of the shaft II, it falls by gravity and the lever h leaves the tappet. The lower end of the said lever strikes against the end of the slot g and moves both valves D and F to the opposite sides of the respective openings c and c. This reverses the directions of the currents of liquid, the front end of the cylinder being placed iq direct communication with the inlet-opening, and the rear end of the cylinder being placed in communication with the outlet-opening. The piston reciprocates continuously in the cylinder, which is made of a predetermined capacity, and the amount of liquid passing through the meter may be ascertained by any approved registering mechanism adapted to indicate the number 01 strokes made by the piston.
\Vhat I claim is 1. The combination, with the measuringcylinder, of the inletvalve chamber provided with an inlet-opening and ports connecting the ends of the said chamber with the same ends of the cylinder, the outlet-valve chamber provided with an outlet-opening and ports connecting the ends of the outlet-valve chamber with the opposite ends of the cylinder, the inlet and outlet valves working back and forth over the said openings, and intermediate operating mechanism, substan tially as set forth, whereby the positions of the valves in their chambers may be reversed at each end of the stroke of the piston in the measuringcylinder.
2. The combination, with the cross-head provided with a plate and a longitudinal slot in the plate, of the inlet and outlet valve rods provided with screw-threaded ends and nuts for adjusting the positions of the valves and securing the rods to the ends of the cross head, and an oscillatory lever engaging with the said slot, whereby both valves may be operated simultaneously, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination, with the measuring cylinder, the inlet and outlet valves, and the valve-chambers provided with openings and with ports connecting the ends of the respective chambers with the same ends and the opposite ends of the cylinder, substantially as set forth, of the oscillatory shaft, the Weighted arm secured to the shaft, stops for limiting the motion of the shaft, a cross-head provided with a longitudinal slot and secured to the rods of the said two valves, and a lever secured to the said shaft and adapted to be operated by tappets on the piston-rod and by the said weighted arm, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
