15 prevents the direct pressure of the gas from acting upon the dome 19, and causing the gas in said discharge-pipe to remain at a normal pressure. In case of fire in the building or if from other cause it is desirable to cut oi'f 2O the supply of gas the cock in the pipe 31 is opened. This admits gas from the supply B atstreet pressure through said pipe 31 into the regulatorA under the dome 19. Said dome is immediately forced upward by the 2 5 increased pressure and carries with it the rod r, forcing` the valvej tightly against its seat g, and cutting off the supply of gas to the discharge 25. At the same time the direct pressure of gas under the dome 10 from the pipe 31 drives the swinging valve 27 against its seat and closes the pipe 26, preventing` any gas passing therethrough to the dischargepipe 25. The spring-tension of the swinging valve is sufficient to hold said valve open 35 against the regulated gas-pressure under the dome, permitting the escape thereof and the dome to descend to open the valve j when the pressure in the discharge 25 is reduced by the lighting of the burners. Such springtensionl is not, however, suficient to resist the direct street-pressure admitted tothe dome as above described through the pipe 231, and said swinging valve is thereby closed. The supplemental gas-pipe 35, being incased in a water-jacket, is protected from injury by heat or from the falling portions of the building, and a light may be retained therefrom illu minating the exits while the main supply of gas is shut off from the building. When it is again desired to turn on the gas, the cock 32 is closed, shutting off the direct press ure from the dome 19. Said pressure is then relieved to permit said dome to fall by opening the vent-cock in the pipe 31. As the dome thus descends it opens the valve j and again admits a regulated supply of gas, as above described, to the discharge-pipe 25.
I do not confine myself to the form of valve j and seat g described, as any suitable construction of valve may be employed.
In Fig. 2 a hollow inverted-cone-shaped valve 40 is shown, which rests upon a knifeedge seat 41, mounted on the top f of the chamber d, in the sameposition as the valveseat g described. Said valve 40 is swiveled at its apex to a rod 4t2, the upper end of which is hinged to a counterbalance-lever4S,
pivoted at l--l to a standard 45, secured iii the chamber-topf. The opposite end. of the lever 13, when this formof valve is employed, is pivoted to the rod o'.
In Fig. 3 a hood-valve is shown. Aseat 50 is constructed in practically thesame form as the valve j, and is designed to be secured. in the topf of the chamber d. The valve 51 is constructed in practically the same form as the valve-seat g described, excepting that its top is closed at 52 and is pivoted to the end of a lever 43, in the position of the stem i2 in Fig 2.
Having thus explained my invention, what I claim is- 1. In a device oi' the character described, a
gas-pressure regulator comprising a body or casing provided with a main supply-pipe, a discharge-pipe, a valve, and connected gasactuated mechanism, in combination with a pipe connecting the discharge-pipe with said. valve mechanism, and a pipe connecting said mechanism directly with the main supplypipe, substantially as and for the purpose Set forth. 2. In a deviceof the character described, a gas-pressure regulator' provided with a main Supply-pipe, a discharge-pipe, and a cut-off valve interposed between said pipes, in combination with a liquid-sealed hood on the stem of said valve, a pipe connecting said hood with the discharge-Lupe, a spring-cushioned swinging valve in the mouth of said pipe, and a pipe connecting said supply-pipe with the hood, substantially as described.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination of a gas-pressure regulator, a supply and a discharge pipe therefor, a pressure-regulating eut-off valve in said regulator, a pipe connecting the discharge-pipe and valve-actuating mechanism, a pipe connecting said supply-pipe with the valve-actuating mechanism, anda cock and vent in said pipe, substantially as described.
4:. In a device of the character described, a gas-pressure regulator and gas supply and discharge pipe therefor,in combination with a pipe connecting said discharge with the pressure-regulating mechanism, and a pipe connecting said supply with said mechanism, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
5. In a device of the character described, the body A, provided with supply and discharge pipes, the valve j, hood 19, and respective seats, arranged substantially as specified, in combination with the pipe 26, provided with a valve 27, and connecting the discharge-pipe with said hood, the pipe 3l, connecting the hood and supply-pipe and provided with a cock 32 and vent 33, substantially as described.
