GILBERT SHERVQOD BELL, OF MOBILE, ALABAMA.
STEAM-VALVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 448,626, dated March 24, 1891.
Application filed December 16, 1890. Serial :NoA 374,896. (No model.)
TOYMZZ wil/0m, it' may concern,.-
Be it known that I, GILBERT SHERwooD BELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mobile, in the county of Mobile and State of Alabama, have invented a new and useful Steam-Valve, of which the following is a speciiication.
This invention relates to steam-valves; and it has for its object to provide a device of this class which shall be simple in construction and easily operated, and which shall occupy less room than the ordinaryT globe or throttle valves, so that it may be more conveniently operated in cramped and confined places.
Thein vention consists in the improved construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims. In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure l is a part sectional elevation of the valve constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2 2 in Fig. l. Fig. is a sectional View of the valve removed from the casing, on the line 3 3 in Fig. 1. Fig. 4is a vertical sectional view of the casing. Fig. 5 is a top view of the device as shown in Fig. l. Fig. 6 is a part sectional elevation showing a modilicationof my invention.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures.
l designates the valve-easing which is provided with flanges 2 and 3 and with interior annular shoulders, as shown at 4 and 5.
6 designates the valve-seat, which is mounted upon the shoulder 4 in the casing, where it may be secured by means of bolts or other fastening devices, or it may be simply pressed into position or cast solid with the valve-casing. The valve-seat has a central boss 7, in which is secured a pin 8, upon which the valve 9 is pivotally mounted, said valve consisting of a circular disk, a portion of the periphery of which is provided with teeth or cogs 9. The said valve has a central boss l0 to afford a bearing for the pin 3, and upon the latter is coiled a spring ll, one end of which bears against the valve and the other end against a washer 12, which is held upon the pin 8 by means of jamnuts 13. The said spring serves to hold the valve against its seat with just enough tension to make a tightjint without causing undue friction. rlhe valve is provided with sector-shaped openings 14, adapted to register with corresponding openings l5 in the valve-seat. The latter is provided on its outer side with tapering strengthening-ribs, as shown at 16, and the valve is likewise provided with ribs 17 for the purpose of enabling it to resist any strain to which it may be subjected.
The casing l is constructed with a chamber 1S, to accommodate a worm 1H, which is mounted upon the square portion 20 of a shaft 2l, the inner end of which has a bearing at 22 in the body of the casing l, at the inner end of the chamber 13. The shaft 2l has a shoulder 23 bearing against a shoulder 24, formed in the casing, which latter is bored out to form the said shoulder and to accommodate the packing-gland 25. Packing 26 is interposed i between the said packing-gland and the shoulder or flange 23upon the stem or shaft 2l, which latter is thus held securely against longitudinal movement. The packing-gland, which is provided at its outer edge with a flange 27, may be screwthreaded, bolted, or otherwise connected with a flange 28 upon the casing. The worin 19 engages the teeth or cogs of the valve, and the rotary movement of the latter may be limited by a stop-pin 29, engaging a groove or shoulder formed in the valve. If preferred, the stop-pin may be attached to the valve and engage a groove in the casing.
The fiange 2 of the valve-casin g is adapted to be bolted or otherwise connected with a pipe leading to the steam-chest. The flange 3 is connected with a flange 30, having an annular interiorly-threaded rim 31 of standard measurement adapted to be connected with a pipe leading to the boiler. The flange 30 is connected by a pipe 32 havingasuitably-constructed valve 33 with the casing l in rear of the valve-seat. This serves for the admission of steam in rear of the valve previous to operating the latter in order that it may be balanced, and consequently easily operated without the friction which would be caused by the pressure of steam upon the face of the valve. The bore of the valve-casing in rear IOO of the valve-scat is larger than the interior diameter of the flange 2, it being bored out, as shown at St, to make it of the same area as the interior diameter of the rim 3l, this being for the purpose of permitting the unobstructed passage ol' steam.
The operation of this part ol my invention will be readily understood. The stem or shaft 2l may be manipulated by a handwhecl 35, upon its outer end to cause the worm lf) to engage the toothed portion of the valve, which latter may thus be adjusted to any desired position.
In Fig. G ol the drawings I have shown a modification of my invention which relates solely to the means for operating the valve.
In this case I substitute for the worm 19 aA rack-barSG, formed upon a stem 537, the ends of which are cylindrical in shape. The caslng l is provided with a chamber 3S, to admit of the longitudinal movement of the rack-bar which is mounted therein, and the ends of which extend through packing-boxes 3S) and 40, formed at the ends of said chamber, and the former of which is sufficiently large in diameter to admit ot' the insertion through it of the rack-bar. The end of the stem 37, which extends through the packing-box 40, is connected pivotally with a lever 4-1, which is pivoted to a link t2, the inner end of which is pivoted to the casing at 3. #It is a rod or bar pivoted to the casing at t5, and having at its outer end a slot 4G. A bolt 47 extends through the said slot and through the handleverll, and is provided with a jam-nut 4S, having a handle It), by means of which it may bcconvenientlymanipulated to retain the hand-lever Il in any position to which it may be adj usted. It will be readily seen how, by manipulating the hand-lever il, the rackbar maybe operated to adj ust the valve to any desired position.
The advantages of my invention will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which it appertains from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed. The construction is simple and inexpensive, the valve is easily operated, and is readily accessible when necessary, for the purpose ot' repairing it.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United Statesl. ln a device of the class described, the combination of the valve-casing l, having annular llanges 2 3 and shoulders 4 and 5, the valve-seat mounted on the shoulder Lt and having pin 8, the valve mounted on said pin and having a bearing on the shoulder 5, and means for operating the valve, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination ot the valve casing l, having` annular flanges 2 3 and shoulders 4 5, the valveseat mounted on the shoulder 4- and having pin S, the valve mounted on said pin and having` a bearing on the shoulder 5, the flange SO, bolted to the flange 3 and having a threaded rim, a valved pipe connecting` the flange 30 with the casing in rear of the valve-seat, and means for operating the valve, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GILBERT SHER WOOD BELL.
