HARVESTER CUTTING APPARATUS.

Be it known that I, MATTHEW \VILSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Garrison, in the county of Benton and state of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Cutter-Bar, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to the cutting apparatus of harvesters or mowers, the object of the same being to provide an improved device of this character.

To this end the invention consists of the details of construction hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and as illustrated in the drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of a section of this improved cutting apparatus. Fig. 2 is an enlarged transverse section of the same on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.

Referring to the said drawings, the letter F designates the finger-bar, and C the cutterbar, which are of the ordinary construction, the latter having an eye or bearing I at its inner end by means of which it is reciproe cated by a pitrnan from a crank-wheel on the machine, as will be understood. The cutterbar carries the usual knives and the fingerbar the usual fingers and shoes.

B is a bar to which is secured a set of knives K, and the bar is seated in a notch in the shoe at each end of the cutting apparatus, and intermediately between these shoes. it rests upon the fingers G, just in front of the finger-bar F, being held in place by a retainingbar R, which bears against its front side and against shoulders S of the fingers. The knives K are preferably one-half the width of the distance between the fingers, and the tip of every alternate knife is secured to the finger by a screw U, as shown in Fig. 1.

The finger-bar F has a raised front edge E, and arms A are detachably secured, as by bolts or screws to the upper side of the finger-bar F, pass over said front edge E, over the cutter-bar C to a point forward of the same, and there support the guide-bar Q. The cutter-bar proper moves between the edge E and the guide Q and beneath the arms A. The knives of the movable cutterbar are secured to the lower face of said bar, and the knives K are secured to the upper face of the bar B. In this manner the faces of the two sets of knives are contiguous, and as they areground on their upper and lower faces, respectively, their action will be similar to that of a pair of shears, the lower knives remaining quiet while theupper knives move over them.

Experience has taught that a cutting ap: paratiis constructed as above described will rarely if ever clog, and will do more effective work than others heretofore constructed. When the knife-bar B is to be removed for sharpening the knives K, tbe screws U are removed and the bar withdrawn longitudinally, whereas the cutter-bar can be removed in the ordinary and well known manner when it is desired to sharpen the upper knives.

XV hat is claimed as new is- 1. In a cutting apparatus, the combination, with the finger bar F, having a raised front edge, the fingers G, secured to said finger-bar, the barB, detachably secured to said fingers,

and the knives K, carried thereby, of the cutter-bar O, carrying knives and moving above said knives K, arms A, detachably secured to f said finger-bar and passing over its frontedge E and over the cutter-bar, and a guidebar Q, carried bythe front ends of said arms, as and for the purpose set forth.

2. In a cutting apparatus, the combination, with the finger-bar F, having a raised front edge, the fingers G, secured to the lower face of said bar and having shoulders S, the bar B, resting upon said fingers against the front of the finger-bar, the retaining-bar R between the bar B and said shoulders, and the knives K, secured to the upper side of the bar B and projecting over said shoulders, of the cutter-bar 0, moving above said knives K against said turned-up front edge E, knives secured to the lower face thereof and moving over and in contact with the lower knives K, arinsdetachably secured to the finger-bar and passing over its front edge andover the cutter-bar, and a guide-bar Q, carried by said arms and standing against the front edge of the cutter-bar and above the knives carried thereby, all as and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
