`CUE--TIP FASTENER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 448,474, dated March 17, 1891.

To all whom it may concern.'

Be it known that I, HENRY M. CRIDER, of Knightstown, county of Henry, and State ot' Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cueflip Fasteners; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters refer to like parts.

My invention relates to devices for fastening tips to billiard-cues, and will be understood from the following description.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on the line x Fig. 3 is ,a perspective view, the fastening device raised. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the upper end of the device, the tip detached from the hooks, the latter sprung out to release the tip. Fig. 5 is a section on the line y y, Fig. 2.

In detail, l is the cue. and 2 a metal tube, having grooves 9 formed in its sides to admit the wires 7. This tube is shouldered below at 3 to fit a projection on the screw-collar 5, which works over a threaded ring G, slipped on the tube 2, and to the inside of this collar are connected spring-wires 7, having hooks on their upper ends for entering the sides of the leather tip S. This tip is shouldered beneath to fit in a corresponding` opening 4 in the top of the tube 2. The upper end of this tube is re-enforced outside for strength, and the wires 7 pass through openings therein. The upperend of the cue is extended through the tube to a line with its shoulder 4 and forms a scat for the tip S, the cue being, preferably, screwed into the tube, as shown in Fig. 2, though they may be united by cement. The collar 5 lits loosely about the tube 2, and after the hooked ends of the wires 7 have been inserted in the leather 8 they are pulled down until the threaded exterior of the ring 6 engages with t-he threads of the collar 5, and by turning down the latter the ring with its wires are drawn downward andthe tip is seated upon the top of the cue and held in place. The wires are preferably elastic and are sprung out to admit the tip, as shown in Fig. 4, and when the latter is set in place and drawn down the wires slide into the grooves 9, and these prevent anylateral movement of the tip.

If desired, the sliding ring might move directly on the cue, the tube 2 being dispensed with; but this would not be so strong a construction, and is therefore objectionable, the essential feature of my invention being the gripping of the tip by hooked wires connected to a sliding ring mounted on the cue and drawn down and locked by engagement with a collar mounted below.

Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is the following:

l. A cue-tip fastener comprising a tube secured to the upper end of a cue, a ring sliding upon such tube, wires connected thereto having hooks at their upper ends for entering the sides of the tip, and a collar loosely mounted on the lower end of such tube, threaded inside, and engaging with threads on the outside of the sliding ring, substantially as shown and described.

2. A cue-tip fastener comprising a tube secured to the upper end of a cue, a collar having a threaded iiangeloosely mounted on the lower end of such tube, a ring sliding upon the tube, wires connected therewith sliding in grooves in'the sides and through openings in the re-enforced upper end of such tube, such wires having hooks for gripping the edges of the tip, in combination with a leather tip having a shouldered base seated in a similar opening in the top of the tube and with a cue connected to the tube, its upper end forming a support for the bottom of the tip, substantially as shown and described.

3. A cue-tip fastener comprising hooked wires for clutching the tip, connected to a ring sliding upon the cue, its outer surface threaded for engagement, and in combination with a collar loosely mounted on the cue below such ring and threaded inside to engage HENRY M. CRIDER. IVitnesses:
