A. HARMAN. SAW SETTING AND INDICATING DEVICE.
No. 447,322. Patented Mar. 3, 1891.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANANIAS HARMAN, OF ROANN, INDIANA,
SAW SETTING AND INDICATING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 447,322, dated March 3,1891.
Application filed October 18, 1890. Serial No. 368,555. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ANANIAS HARMAN, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Roann, in the county of Wabash and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Saw Setting and Indicating Device, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in saw setting and indicating devices.
The object of the present invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive saw-set and a convenient and accurate device for indicating the degree of set of the saw-teeth.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved saw setting and indicating apparatus. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1- designates a base, which may be constructed of a block of wood or any other suitable material, and which is provided with an upright 2, the upper end of which is bifurcated to afford a bearing for a lever 3. The inner end of said lever 3 is provided with a tooth 4, arranged adjacent to an anviland adapted to be depressed by the teeth of a saw which is supported on the anvil, and the outer end of the lever 3 is extended between a pair of indicator-plates 6, arranged at the outer end of the base 1 and provided with grad nations and having their tops connected by a stop-bar 7, which confines the free end of the lever in the space between thegage-plates 6.
The anvil 8, which is suitably mounted upon the outer end of the base-plate 1, is provided with flanges 9, having perforations for the reception of the bolts 10 or the like, by means of which the anvil is secured to the base, and the said anvil is provided with a notch or recess 11, one side of which is pro vided with a double bevel 11, and 'into which the teeth of the saw which is to be set may be depressed by a suitable tool. After a tooth has been depressed in the recess 11 it is tested to ascertain if the proper degree of set has been given to the tooth by supporting the of the lever on the graduated indicator-plate,
and the lever is provided at its outer end with a laterally-extending indicator-pin 13, arranged opposite the graduation of the indicator-plate.
From the foregoing description and the accompanying drawings, the construction, operation, and the advantages of the invention will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which it appertains.
Having thus described my invention, what 0 I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. Ina saw setting and indicating device, the combination of the base-plate, a lever pivoted to an upright upon the same and provided with a tooth arranged to be engaged by the teeth of the saw, and an indicatorplate arranged adjacent to the outer end of the lever, substantially as described.
2. In a saw setting and indicating device 8c the combination, of the base, the anvil mounted upon the base and having a transverse angular recess, the lever pivotally mounted upon an upright rising from the base and having a tooth arranged adjacent to the an vil, and an indicator-plate, substantially as described.
3. In a saw setting and indicating device, the combination of the base, the anvil mounted upon the same and having a transverse o angular recess, the lever having a tooth arranged adjacent to the anvil, and the indicator-plates arranged at the outer end of the base and forming a space to receive the lever and provided with a stop-bar to confine the lever in said space, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ANANIAS I'IARMAN.
