Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SILVESTER SHAW7 OF RUSSELLVILLE, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN APPARATUS FOR THROWING HORSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 44,665, dated October l1, 1864.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, SILT/ESTER SHAW, of Russellville, in the county of Brown, in the State of Ohio, have invented an Improved Apparatus for Throwing Colts and Horses for Surgical Operations; and I hereby declare that the following is a true and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
In the annexedv drawings, Figure l represents an edge View of one ot' the straps constituting my apparatus, with a cord attached to it. Fig. 2 represents a plan View of another auxiliary strap. Fig. 3 gives an edge View of an additional auxiliary strap.
The letter A, Fig. 2, represents the strap that is designed to go around the neck of the horse. The strap A (marked in dotted lines) has at one end the ring e, and at the opposite end is furnished with the buckle d. The strap F is also secured to the ring e, and at the opposite end passes through the buckle d. F has a number of holes in it, so that it can be adjusted as the occasion may require.
g represents a metal link through which ring c passes. To the lower end of this link is attached the pulley h, to be used as hereinafter explained.
' B and B2 represent a spancel in two parts,
strap, D, a foot (more or less) in length attached to it, which is made to pass through loop m, through another loop at the end of strap C, then back again through loop m, and is furnished at its outer end with an iron ling, f. The strap C has a buckle on it for purposes of adjustment.
The spancel formed of B and B2 is intended to go around the pastern joints of the fore legs of the horse to be thrown, and strap C is designed to embrace the left hind pastern-joint.
The strap E, Fig. 1, is intended to go around the right hind pastern-joint, and the, rope P, attached to it by means of a ring, I, is made to pass between the fore legs ot' the horse to the pulley h on straps A, and then returns on the outside of the leg of the horse until it reaches the right hand of one of the operators.
The different parts of my apparatus being thus adjusted, one operator takes hold of the tail of the horse with his left hand and pulls the right hind foot by means of rope P at the moment that the assistant operator draws the left hind foot by means of strap C. By this operation the weight of the animal will be thrown on his left hind leg, and he will come down gently, and in a manner similar to his natural mode of lying down.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Paten t, 1s-
The combination of the strap E, the rope P, the straps A and F, the spancel B and B2, and the strap C, the whole constructed and arranged for the purpose substantially as herein set forth.
SILVESTER SHAW.
