UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIC JACOB BRINKERHOFF, OF AUBURN, NEW' YORK.
lC E- TONGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.446,171, dated February 10, 1891.
Application filed October '7, 1890.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J ACOB BRINKERHOFF, a citizen of the United States, residing at Auburn, in the county of Cayuga and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ice-Tongs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to ice-tongs; and it consists of certain novel and useful improvements in the construction of the same, fully disclosed in the specification following and more particularly pointed out in the claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective View of my improved device, and Fig. 2 a horizontal transverse section of Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate identical parts throughout.
In the handling of ice with the ordinary construction of ice-tongs much inconvenience and loss have heretofore been experienced from the fact that the ice when seized by the tongs is liable to swing or turn on the points, thus loosening the grip of the tongs, and at the same time splitting and splintering the ice and frequently allowing it to fall to the ground, causing considerable waste from breakage. The object of my invention is to overcome this-difficulty and provide an improved construction of ice-tongs which will grip the ice in such a manner as to prevent its turning on the points and the consequent loss before set forth.
Referring to the drawings, A A represent Serial No- 367,362. (No model.)
the two arms of theice-tongs, pivoted together at m in the usual manner and provided with handles B B of ordinary construction at their upper extremities. The lower ends of the arms A A are each provided with prongs C C, the points of which extend inwardly and.
a right or other considerable angle, thus engaging the ice securely at four points and preventing it from slipping or turning.
In my preferred form shown in the drawings I construct the prongs in such a manner that they engage the ice on lines at right angles to each other; but I do not care to limit myself to this construction.
The prongs may be turned at any angle by simply twisting the armsA A, or one of them, until the prongs occupy the desired position.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
Ice-tongs consisting of two arms pivoted together, the lower end of each arm being provided with two points held from rotation, the plane of the line of the points of one arm intersecting the plane of the line of the points of the other arm, for the purpose set forth,
In testimony whereof I affix my signaturei presence of two witnesses.
JACOB BRINKERIIOFF.
