J. R. WHITE. COTTON SORAPER.
No. 445,827, Patented Feb. 3, 1891.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JEREMIAH R. WHITE, OF MIDWVAY MISSISSIPPI.
COTTON-SCRAPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 445,827, dated February 3, 1891.
Application filed October '7, 1890. Serial No. 367,312. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that. I, JEREMIAH RWHITE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Midway, in the county of Hinds and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cotton-Plow Scrapers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The special object of the invention is to secure the scraper-standard to the plow-beam,
so that it may be conveniently adjusted and firmly held in any preferred position.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a side elevation of a plow with scraper-standard secured to the beam thereof; Fig. 2, a detail view of the clip which secures the standard to the plowbeam; Fig. 3, a detail perspective View of my improved wedge.
In the drawings, A represents the plowbeam, B the fastening-clip, and O the scraperstandard.
The clip Bis a U shaped rod of metal having the two right-angled arms 17 b threaded to receive the nuts I) b at the ends. On each side of the beam A is an oblong plate D or D, each apertured to receive the arms 19 bwhich pass therethrough, one bearing on the right side of the beam A and the other against the scraper-standard C. The plate D is slotted at dd' to allow it to have a flat square bearing upon the clip, so that the round part of the clip will fit against the plate from top to bottom. By tightening up the nuts I) with a wrench the clip is made to clamp the standard 0 to the beam A laterally. One of the clip-arms b b has its bearing on the under side,-while the other rests in a cross groove 0 of the Wedge E. The latter is double, or made to taper down from the middle toward each end. one side being narrower than the other, so that it may fit beams of unequal Width. This makes the rabbet c. The adjustment of the wedge so as to receive the arm of the clip in either of the grooves 6 enables the plowman to accommodate the clip to any depth of plow-beam. The main object of these clipfastenings is to throw the point of blade up or down without cutting any more or any less, and thus obviate the objection to adj ust-ing the blade on the standard. The blade F is provided with holesff, arranged in a line parallel to the reversible cuttin g-edges f f.
The standard 0 is placed on the left side of the plow-beam, so that the scraper may work on the soil between the bar of the plow and the row of plants.
My scraper being turned to the left brings the draft on the right side and face of the blade. The angles of clip being on the under side of the beam and slightly rounded, while the standard edges having their hearing therein are sharp, causes the standard, and consequently the scraper-blade, to work or have unnecessary play. Hence I make at each end of the plate D, which bears against the scraper-standard on the inside of the holes next to the round pointof the band, an elongation of the hole or a groove d. This enables the clip to fit nicely against the washer-plate from top to bottom and also holds the wedge firmly in place. The washer-plate D, which has a bearing on the standard, also permits the front partof the standard to come in square against the arm of the clip.
Having thus described all that is necessary to a full understanding of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to protectby Letters Patent, is
A grooved wedge E, having a rabbet 0, clip 13, a plate D, and a plate D, having the slots cl" cl, in combination with the standard and plow-beam for the purpose of throwing the points of a scraper up or down, as set forth. In testimony whereof I affiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JEREMIAH R. WHITE.
