EDlVIN G. FARNHAM, OF DOVER, MAINE.
COW-TAIL HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 444,428, dated January 13, 1891.
Application filed February 24,1890. Serial No. 341,602. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN G. FARNHAM, of Dover, in the county of Piscat-aquis and State of Maine,'have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cow-Tail Holders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, which will enable those experienced in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to cow-tail holders; and it has for its object to provide a device of this class which shall be simple in construction, and which may be readily manipulated by one hand of the operator to clamp the tail of the cow and attach it to one of the hind legs for the purpose of holding the tail while milking.
The invention consists in the details 0 construction, which will be hereinafter fully described, an d particularlypointed out in the claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure 1 is a plan view of a cow-tail holder constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same with the top covering-plate removed. Fig. 3 is a detail view of one of the covering-plates detached.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures.
Between a pair of plates 11, which may be rectangular with rounded corners or of any other suitable shape, is secured a bar 2, having a jaw 3 and a curved arm at, which extend laterally in oppositcdirections. The face of the jaw 3 is made wavy or corrugated, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and the arm 4 is provided with a curved portion 5, which separates it from the body of the bar 2. The latter is secured by means of bolts or rivets U at the two corners of the plates 1 1, as will be clearly seen in the drawings.
At the corner which is opposite to the jaw 3 is pivoted a jaw 7, the face of which corresponds with that of the jaw 3. The jaw 7 is provided with ahandle 8, extending laterally at an angle to the said jaw.
9 designates a curved arm similar to the arm 4;- and provided like the latter with a metal curved portion 10. Said arm is pivoted at the fourth corner of the plates 1 1 upon a bolt or rivet 11, and it is provided with a laterally-extending handle 12, corresponding with the handle 8. At the upper inner corner of the handle 12 is a lug 13, which extends laterally over a similar lug 14, extending from the handle 8. A spring 15. arranged within the casing formed by the plates 1 1, is interposed between the bar 2 and the lug 13, serving to force the curved arm 9 in the direction of the curved arm 4. At the same time the lug 13, bearing against the lug 14, will swing the jaw 7 upon its pivotal bolt 16 in the direction of the jaw 3.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation of my invention will be readily understood. The operator grasps and compresses the handles 8 and 12, thus swinging the jaw 7 and arm 9 upon their respective pivots against the tension of the spring 15. thus enabling the cows tail to be inserted between the jaws 3 and 7, while the curved arms 4: and 9 are caused to clamp the leg of the cow. hen the handles 8 and 12 are released, the spring will actuate the curved arm 9, forcing the latter, as well as the jaw 7, in an inward direction and retaining the device upon the leg and tail of the animal. The construction of this device is very simple, and it may be very easily and quickly manipulat-ed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- In a cow-tail holder, the combination of the casing-plates, a bar secured between the same and having a jaw and a curved arm extending laterally in opposite directions, a jaw mounted pivotall at the corner opposite to the fixed jaw and having a laterally-extending handle, a curved arm mounted pivotally at the corner opposite to the fixed arm and having a laterally-extending handle, the lugs extending from said handles past each other, and a spring arranged within the casing and bearing against the inner lug, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
EDWIN G. FARNI-IAM.
