T I 0. DAVIDSON.
DEVICE FOR THE TRANSMISSION OF POWER.
No. 433,772. Patented Aug. 5, 1890.
716%? v Jrzz/erdar UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES DAVIDSON, OF GUELPH, ONTARIO, CANADA.
DEVICE FOR THE TRANSMISSION OF POWER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 433,772, dated August 5, 1890.
Application filed May 273, 1890. Serial No. 3521957- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, CHARLES DAVIDSON, a citizen of Canada, residing at Guelph, in the county of IVellingtomin the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new being made to the accompanying drawings,-
in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved device. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same. Fig. 3 is a front view of the same.
The object of my invention is to provide a device whereby the steam-engine may be placed at any safe distance from, and at any angle to, the barn in which the thrashingmaehiue is placed, thus preventing all danger from the sparks of the said engine setting fire to the barn or adjoining stacks.
In the drawings, A is the frame of my device or jack, preferably made of hard wood. In the center of the sides of this frame is journaled a shaft B. In the center of this shaft is secured a belt-pulley C, and on either side of this pulley on the shaft B are secured two pulleys D D each having a V-shaped groove. In front of this frame or facing the steam-engine are journaled in bearings e two vertical shafts E, in line, one above the other, each carrying an idler-pulley F, having a U- shaped groove. The diameters of these pulleys are equal to the distance between the pulleys D D These pulleys F have the lower flanges of the U-shaped groove projecting, and serve as guides forthe rope or cable K, which is driven by a steam-engine placed a safe distance away. These bearings 6 may be movably attached to the frame A by means of shanks sliding in slots 1), to compensate for the different levels at which the engine may be set.
In order to compensate for inequalities in the ground, or to enable the jack to be set 011 the bridge of the barn, the bottom beams or sills a of the frameA are hinged by bolt or otherwise at G, and to the front of these sills are attached segmental arms H, having slots h. These arms are secured by fasteniugs I. This enables the jack to be set, as shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 1, on the bridge of the barn in-which the separatoris working. A carrier or roller adapted to raise the rope K to a level with the idler-pulleys may be used between the engine and jack.
In Fig. 2 the engine (which is not shown) is placed opposite the jack; but it may be placed at any angle. The dotted lines show it in two different directions. When the engineis set on the side X of the jack, the cable or rope K passes over the idler-pulleys F and over the pulley D thus transmitting the motion from the cable K to the belt L, which drives the separator. When the engine is set on the side Y, the cable passes over the idlerpulleys and the pulley D.
In Fig. 3 the dotted lines show the position of the idler-pulleys when the engine is on a higher level than the jack.
The cable or rope K may be of any length, thus enabling the engine to be set at any distance up to four hundred feet away from the barn, or farther, if desired.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a device for the transmission of power between a steam-engine and a thrashing-machine,-the combination, with a frame A, having a shaft B journaled therein,on which are secured a belt-pulley C, and two pulleys D.
D having V-shaped grooves, of two vertical shafts E, each having a pulley F secured thereon, these pulleys having U shaped grooves, the diameters of the bottom flanges of these pulleys being greater than those of the top ones, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. In a device for the transmission of power between a steam-engine and a thrashing-machine, the combination, with a frame A, the shaft B, pulleys O D D of the vertical shaft E and pulleys F, substantially as and for the purpose described. 7
Signed at Guelph this 3d day of May, 1890.
