CHRISTOPII. BREUSCIIER, OF PLANO, ASSIGNOR TO THE PLANO MANUFAC- TURING COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
GRAIN-BINDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 433,644, dated August 5, 1890. Application filed October 17, 1889- Serial No. 327,298. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.- yoke E is pivoted at one end to the outer end Beitknown that I, OHRIsTOPH. BREUSCHER, of this lug and extends to the other side of a citizen of the United States, residing at the knotter-frame'in a direction perpendicu- Plano, in the county of Kendall and State of lar to the shaft A, which it is arranged to em- 5 Illinois, have invented certain new and useful brace. This yoke is considerably larger than Improvements in Grain-Binders, which are the shaft, so that considerable free vertical fully set forth in the following specification, vibration of the former is permitted upon reference being had to the accompanying its pivot. At the end of the yoke opposite drawings, in which to the pivot and on the opposite side of the no Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a knotter-frame a pawl F is connected thereto knotter-frame for a binder, partlyin section, at its upper end by a hinge or pivot joint. containing my improvements; Fig. 2, an end This pawl is nearly straight and depends elevation of the same; Fig. 3, a detail of the from the end of the yoke about straight pawl and notched wheel of the cord-holder, downward, the yoke being of such length that I 5 taken on an enlarged scale; and Fig. 4, a dethe lower end of the pawl is brought into the tail plan of a section from the lower part of same plane as the ratchet-wheelon the notched the frame upon the same enlarged scale. disk, as seen in Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawings.
My invention relates to automatic grain- At the lowcrend of the pawl isahook j, which binders for harvesting-machines; and it co11- is adapted to engage with the teeth of the 2o sists in certain improvements in the devices ratchet, and aspringf is fastened to the back for operating the notched disk or wheel, which thereof, by means of which the pawl is held constitutes apart of the cord-holder. up toward the ratchet, so as to engage with I will describe in detail so much of a bindits teeth. This is effected by making an aning-machine as is necessary to an undergular bend bin the lower bar of the knot- 2 5 standing of my invention, and will then point tor-frame directly opposite the teeth of the out definitely in claims the special improveratchet, so that the pawl will stand between ments which I believe to be new and wish to this shoulder or bend and the ratchet, and secure by Letters Patent. the spring upon the back of the pawl will find As the invention relates simply to a special a bearing against this shoulder, thereby forc- 8o 30 part of the binder,1 have not shown and shall ing the lower end of the pawl forward into not describe the full machine, and only those proper position to engage with the ratchet, parts of the binder are illustrated by the as seen in Fig. 1 of the drawings. Now it is drawings which are necessary to an underevidentthat if the yoke is vibrated vertically standing of the construction and operation of upon its pivot it will give a reciprocating 3 5 my present improvement. movement to the pawl in the'same direction,
In the drawings, A represents the cam and and the latter being made of suitable length gear shaft of a grain-binder, and B the knotthe upward movement will cause it to engage tor-frame, which is mounted loosely on said with the ratchet, and so turn the notched shaft in the usual way. The cord-holding disk, as required, while the downward move- 9 o disk 0 is mounted in the lower part of the ment will thrust the pawl downward past the frame in the usual way, being provided with ratchet-teeth in position for another engagethe usual notches c and also with a ratchet ment therewith, the back spring yielding to wheel or hub c, this feature being also an orpermit this movement, and so the desired indinary device. The usual keeper D is of termittent rotation of the notched disk will 5 45 course provided to receive one edge of the be effected. This desired vibration of the disk, so that the binding-cord will be clamped yoke is obtained by a suitable cam G on the therein. shaft within the yoke. As shown in the At the upper end of the knotter-frame B a drawings, this device consists of a lug g upon stud or lug 12 projects out from the side opa collar g, which is fastened 011 the shaft. I00
50 posite to that on which the cord-holder is 10- This lug stands just outside of the plane of cated, as seen in Fig. 2 of the drawings. A the upper and lower arms of the yoke and upon its inside carries a small anti-friction roller 9 mounted on a pivot-stud on the in side of the lug and standing in the plane of the upper and lower portions of the yoke. As the shaft is rotated it is evident, therefore, that the roller will be brought alternately in contact with these portions of the yoke, and that when it comes in contact with the upper arm it will raise the yoke on its pivot, and then will depress the same when it strikes its lower arm'. The vibration of the yoke necessary to a proper working of the pawl will thus be produced, it being of course understood that the cam must be arranged on the shaft at such a point that this movement of the yoke will be at the proper time to effect the movement of the cord-holding disk at the instant required. It is evident that this yoke operates as a lever for reciprocating the pawl, and so the construction and arrangement of this device may be modified, so long as it is adapted to operate as a lever vibrated by-the rotation of the shaft.
It is also evident that the construction of the cam on the shaft may be greatly varied, and in fact some other device may be substituted for a cam, provided always that it is adapted to give the proper vibration to the lever by the rotation of the shaft. It will be seen that with these devices I obtain a direct action of the pawl in nearly straight lines and with a Very few pieces, so that the device is very simple and cheap and at the same time is absolutely certain in its operation.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a graiirbinder, the cord-holder disk provided with a ratchet, in combination wit-h a straight pawl, a lever pivoted to the knotterframe on one side of the latter and on the opposite side connected to the upper end of the pawl and arranged to embrace and enti rely inclose the cam-shaft, and a cam mounted on the cam and gear shaft and arranged to vibrate said lever positively, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
2. The knotter-frame B, provided with the angular bend b in its lower bar, the ratchet c on the cord-holder disk, the pawl F, and the spring f, arranged to bear upon the shoulder formed by the bend b in the frame, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
3. The cam and gear shaft A, in combina tion with the knotter-frame B, provided with a lug lathe yoke E, pivoted at one end to said lug and extended across and embracing and entirely inclosing said shaft, the collar g, secured to said shaft and provided with the lug g, the roller 9 mounted on a stud on the inside of said lug, the spring-pawl F, pivoted to the free end of the yoke, and the ratchet on the notched disk 0, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
