IMPROVEMENT-IN LU BRICATO RS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0.43,305, dated June 28, i864.
To a/Z whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS W. Gerwin, ot' Portsmouth, in the county of Norfolk'and State of Virginia, havelinvented a new and useful Improvement in Lubricators and I do h rreby claim that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and 'to the let-ters of reference marked thereon.
The object of my invention is the introduciion'of oil or any lubricating substance into the interior of cylinders and other parts 0f a steamengine against or in spite ofthe pressure of steam, and in such a manner that the steam will not escape during its admission. rIhis I accomplish by the construction of aluhricator,as shown in the accompanying drawing.
A is the reservoir for containing the oil.
B` is the feedingeup.
y O U is a cylinder, formed of one or more sections, and is constructed with valve-seats at D D and orifices at E E.
F is a double-val\'ed piston with valves at G G.
H is a piston-rod 'for raising and lowering the piston on the valveseats, and is attached to the piston by means of a swivel. This piston-rod is constructed with a thread, whichA works in a thread in the cylinder above the' upper valve-seat. t
I is the packing on the piston to prevent the steam and lubricating substance from escaping while the piston is being moved from one valve-seat to the other. The piston F is moved from one valve-seat to the other by turning the piston-rod, which is done by means of the crank K.
L is an escape-cock for dra-wing oft' the water produced by the condensation of' steam in the reservoir.
, The mode of operating-this lubricator is as follows: Turn the crank Ktothe right until the double-valved piston F isl forced down on the lower valve-seat. Open the Waste cock and allow any water that may be in the reservoir to escape. Then close thewastc-cock and pour the lubricatingbil into thei'eedingrcup B, which Willrun intol the reservoir through the orifices E E E in the cylinder. 'lurn the cra-nkKto the left, which will raise the doublevalved piston to the upper valve-seat, when the steam will rush up and fill the space abm'c the lubricating` substance in the reservoir, where it is condensed, and the water t-hus produced, being heavier than the lubricatingsubstance, sinks tothe bottom of the reservoir, and gradually raises it up to the orifices E' E' E in .the cylinder, through which it. passes to the parts to be lubricated.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Lett-ers Patent, is-
