DOOR CHECK.
No. 432,867. Patented July 22,1890.
/%SSES i INLAENTOH J a 8r A TTOHNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES W. FISHEL AND FRANK S. HOTCHKISS, OF CARBONDALE, COLORADO.
DOOR-CHECK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 432,867, dated July 22, 1890..
Application filed January 27, 1890. Serial No. 338,169. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES W. FISHEL and FRANK S. HOTCHKISS, of Oarbondale, in the county of Garfield and State of Colorado, have invented a new and Improved Door- Check, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Ourinvention is animprovementin thatclass of door-holders or so-called door-checks whose main feature is a springcatch adapt-ed to receive and firmly clasp a knob or projection (which is in practice attached to the door.) In our device the spring-catch is inclosed in and protected by a detachable barrel or tube that is applied (by means of a screw-joint) to the part having a screw for attaching it to a wall, as herein described.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawi'ngs,for1nin g a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures. I
Figure 1 is a perspective View of the im' provement as applied. Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevation of the same with parts in section; and Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view of the same on the line as a; of Fig. 2.
The improved base, knob, and door-holder A is provided with a knob B, adapted to be secured to the door 0, and provided with a rounded offset D, on which is formed a shoulder E, from which projects a screw F, adapted to screw in the door until the ofiset E abuts against the door. The rounded part D of the knob 13 is adapted to be engaged by a springcatch G, made of two spring-plates G, each having at its free end a curved part G similar in shape to the outer surface of the rounded part of the knob 13.
The ends of the spring-plates G are secured to a bar H, having its outer end formed into a fork I, between which is journaled a plate J by means of a bolt K, held in the fork I. The plate J is provided with a flange J, from which extends centrally a screw J adapted to screw into the base-board of the wall L until the flange J abuts against said base-board. (See Fig. 2.) The plate J is secured to the base-board L in the usual manner, so that it stands horizontally, while the pivot pin or bolt K extends vertically, to permit of swinging the catch G into any desired angle in relation to the base-board L.
On the bar H, near the fork I, is formed a thread H, adapted to be engaged by an interior thread formed on one end of a barrel N, adapted to cover up the springcatch G, and open at its outer end to permit the ready entrance of the rounded part D of the knob B. The barrel N prevents to a great extent dust from settling on the spring-catch G, and also prevents the latter from being injured.
The door-holder is used as follows: The spring-catch G is secured to the base-board L by the plate J screwing in the base-board L, and then the knob is screwed to the door O near its lower outer end, so that when the door swings open the knob B is in position to engage the bent parts G of the springplates G, as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3. When this takes place, the said spring-plates G, by their rounded parts G pressing on the rounded part D of the knob B, hold and lock the door in an open position until the operator exerts considerable pressure on the door in order to disengage the rounded part D from the spring-catch G.
It will be seen that as the spring-catch G is articulated itcan be curved into any desired position, so as to engage the knob 13 at all times.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The improved door-holder consisting of the forked bar H, having the cylindrical threaded portion H, the spring-catch plates G, secured to said bar, and the internally-threaded barrel N, adapted to inclose said catches and to' screw on the bar H, and the flanged plate J, pivoted to the latter and having a centrally: projecting screw, as shown and described.
