To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, JOSEPH SCHILLING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oarpet-Stretchers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,`

clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon,forming part of this specilication.

My invention consists in the improvements in carpet-stretchers hereinafter set forth and explainedLand illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective View of my improved carpet-stretcher. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section ofsame on the line t c in Fig. l.

The objects of my invention are, iirst, to construct the drag or pad portion of a carpetstretcher of the type shown with a toothed plate for engaging with the carpet secured to the front end thereof at a suitable angle to engage with the carpet, so that it may be raised or lowered,'according to the thickness of the carpet to' be operated upon, and, second, to construct the knee-cushion frame of such a stretcher of two sections hinged together and having the rear end of one section thereof hinged to the rear end of the frame, so that the stretcher is adapted to be operated either by means of downward pressure of the knee or by pressure applied to the rear portion of the cushion when in a raised position.

Other features of my invention appear hereinafter in the specification and claims.

In the construction of my improved carpetstretch er shown, A is an ordinary staff having a sharp spike a in the lower end thereof, to which staff A is coupled a short chain B, having a hook h on the end thereof adapted to be hooked into an eye O on the front end Dof the drag or pad. The frame E of the drag or pad is made preferably in the form of a shallow rectangularbox, having the front end D considerably higher than the sides e.

This front end D is inclined backward from grecs, and on the front thereof is a plate F,

having sharp serrated teeth f on the lower edge thereof, this plate F being provided with vertical slots g g, through which bolts G G pass into the front D of the frame, by lneans whereof the toothed plate F can be raised or lowered, so that the teeth f thereon will project more or less below the bottom of the drag or pad, according to the thickness of the carpet to be stretched.

At the rearend d of the pad-frame E, I hinge the rear end of the cushion-frame II I-I, this cushion-frame being hinged together near its center by means of hinges h, so that the rear portion II can be raised to an upright position, the front end I of the portion H' thereof theny engaging with. a transverse stop J, secured across the inside of the bottom of the frame E, so that the portion II thereof is held in an upright position. When so adjusted, the hook b on the chain B can be detached from the eye C and the staff A laid aside, and the pad or drag can be pushed forward by placing the knee of the operator against the cushion K on the portion H of the cushion-frame; but when the pad or drag is used in connection with the staff A and the chain B the cushion-frame H H is laid down upon the bottom of the inside of the pad or drag frame E, as shown in Fig. 2, and the foot or knee used thereon while it is drawn forward by means of the staff A and chain B. It will thus be observed that by my construction of the pad or drag of the carpetstretcher I am enabled to operate it with either the staff A and chain B or without them.

Having thus described my invention so as to enable others to make and use the same, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-

l. The combination, in a carpet-stretcher, of a pad or drag frame having an inclined toothed pate adjustably secured to the front end thereof, andaknee-cushion framehinged to the rear end of said drag-frame, constructed of two sections hinged together, with a dragchain secured 'to the upper edge of the raised portion of the front end of the drag-frame IOC) and a spiked staff secured to the other end of said drag-chain, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. The combination, in a carpet-stretcher pad or drag, of an inclined serrated toothed plate adjustably secured to the front end of the pad o1' drag frame, With a cushion-frame constructed of sections hinged together and to the rear of the pad ordrag frame, and stops iu the base of the pad or drag frarneadapted to engage with the end of the front section of the cushion-frame when the rear section of the said frame is raised to annpright position, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
