(No Model.) 7
W. BROOKS.
BROILER OR TOASTER. I No. 431,550. Patented July 8, 1890.
d W all:
JJ- i UNITED STATES.
PATENT OFFICE.
lVILLIAM BROOKS, OF OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA.
BROILER OR TOASTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 431,550, dated July 8, 1890.
Application filed December 6, 1889.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM BROOKS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Broilers orv Toasters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple, cheap, and easily-managed broiler or toaster.
My invention resides. principally in the means for connecting the handle to the frame and in the means for holding the parts of the toaster-frame together.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of the toaster with the parts of the frame closed; Fig. 2, a similar View with the parts open; Fig. 3, an enlarged View of the coils forming the socket in the handle; Fig. 4., a detail View of the coils of the frame forming the bearing on which the coils of the handle fit and about which they turn. Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail illustrating the two parts in Figs. 3 and 4 in their work-- ing-connection. Fig. 6 is an enlarged detail of a guide-loop, through which the chain for holding the parts of the frame together passes.
The two frames A and B are constructed of wire and are hinged together at one end. In that. side of the frame A opposite that which is hinged is formed the cylindrical coil 0, constituting a bearing to receive the handle, on which the toaster may be rotated. The wire of the frame at each end of the coil stands substantially at right angles to the axis of the coil. The shank of the handle 0 is also constructed of wire, and has a coil d, constituting a socket which fits frictionally upon and is adapted to be turned upon the bearing 0. The shank of the handle prefer-' ably extends at right angles to the plane of the frame to which it isattached; but its upper end is bent back atright angles to the shank and receives a hand-piece of wood. or other non-heat-conducting material. In the wire of the upper part of --the handle is formed a loop 6, and upon the handle isp'rovided a pin or hook f, for the purpose to be presently explained.
A chain D is attached to the frame B and Serial No. 332,860. (No model.)
' passes through the opening formed by the coiled bearing 0, thence upward through the loop 6 to the .pin f, to which it may be fastened with one of its links. By drawing the chain tight the parts of the frame may be clamped firmly upon the meat or bread placed between them. When one side of the meat or bread has been satisfactorily treated, the
other side may be conveniently presented to the fire by turning the toaster upon its handle to a position the reverse of that which it previously occupied.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 1 1. In combination, a wire frame A, having the cylindricalbcaring c of coiled wire, the handle 0, having its shank formed of wire and provided with a coiled socket d to fit and turn-upon the bearing 0 of the frame A, and means for securing an article to be broiled or toasted upon the said frame, substantially as described.
. 2. In combination, a wire frame A, having the cylindrical bearing 0 of coiled wire, the handle 0, provided with a coiled-Wire socket cl fitting and rotatable upon the aforesaid bearing, a frame B, hinged to the frame A, a chain attached to said frame B and passing through the coil-bearing c,-a hook f on the handle, whereby the chain may be detachably connected with the same, substantially as described.
3. A broiler or toaster composed of a wire frame A, having the coiled-Wire cylindrical bearing 0 formed therein, the handle C, provided with a coiled-wire socket d, fitting and rotatable upon the aforesaid bearing 0, the loop 6 and pin f upon said handle, the frame B, hinged to frameA, and the chain D, attached to said frame B, passing through the coiled bearing 0 and loop e and adapted to be detachably secured-to the pin or hook f, substantially as described;
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of witnesses.
WILLIAM BROOKS.
