EXTENSION-LADDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 431,353, dated July 1, 1890.
Application filed January 31, 1890. Serial No. 338,788. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, VICTOR I'IOLMQVIST, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain Improvements in Extension-Ladders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates more especially to the guiding-brackets for that form of extension-ladder made in sections and adapted to slide one upon the other; and the presentimprovement has for its object to provide a simple and efficient form of guide-bracket for such extension-ladders embodying the features of a light, strong, and rigid bracket-piece for carrying the anti-friction confining-roller as well as an improved construction of such anti-friction roller by which great cheapness and durability of the same areattained. I attainsuch object by the construction and arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a detail cross-section of an extension-ladder to which my present improvement is applied; Fig. 2, a perspective view of the guide-bracket detached; Fig. 3, a plan view of the same with the anti-friction roller in section; Fig. 4, a transverse section of side bar or stile of the lower ladder-section, showin g the saw slit or kerf for receiving the edges of the guide-bracket; Fig. 5, a detail side elevation of the lower ladder-section, showing the washer-plate for the attaching-bolts of the guide-bracket; and Fig. 6, a detail section illustrating the means for tying the top of the main ladder-section together by means of the top round.

As represented in the drawings, the guidebook or roller-bracket is secured near the upper end of the stiles B of the lower or main ladder-section; and in the present invention this bracket consists of a channeled piece A, the side flanges a of which are made tapering and. fit in saw kerfs or slits b in the stile B, and attached in place by a series of radiallyarranged bolts 0, that pass through the triangular washer-plate D on the outside of the stile B, the center of which plate 1) is formed with an orifice d for the passage of the screw 6, that. secures the top round E of the lower ladder-section in place in the stile; and such round passes through an orifice ct in the bracket-piece A, and is additionally tied thereto by straps F, riveted to the sides of said piece and extending along the sides of the round and secured thereto by bolts or rivets f.
At the top of the bracket-piece A is secured an overhanging piece G, of a box shape, that forms a cavity, in which is arranged the antifriction roller II, that bears upon the side rails or stiles I of the adjustable ladder-section to confine the same in place, the journal-pin J of the roller passing through the front and rear walls of the box-piece G and through the bracket-piece A, as shown, to form a strong and substantial support for such roller.
In the present invention the anti-friction roller II is formed with. a central core of hard wood H, upon which the outer metallic sleeve-sections H H are driven, and such sleeves are tapered on their inside in order to compress the wooden core on being driven onto the same, so as to effect a strong and durable attachment, while their outer surface is also tapered so as to form a grooved periphery for the anti-friction roller to more perfectly guide the movable ladder-section in its adjustment.
Having thus fully described said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with the stationary and movable sections of an extension-ladder, of the bracket-plate A, having an overhanging piece G and provided with side flanges adapted to fit in grooves in the stiles of the stationary ladder-section, essentially as herein set forth.
2. The combination, with the stationary and movable sections of an extension-ladder, of the bracket plate A, having side flanges adapted to fit in grooves in the stiles of the stationary ladder-section and provided with an overhanging piece G, of a box shape, and the anti-friction roller H, journaled in the cavity of said piece, essentially as herein described.
