SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 430,788, dated June 2d, 1890.
Application filed January 4, 1890. Serial No. 835,874. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES SEYMOUR, of Defiance, in the county of Defiance and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and use f Lil Improvements in lenoning-h/Iachincs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in tenoning-machines.
The object is to provide an adjustable support for revolubly holding the hubs of carriage and wagon wheels with their spokes while the tenons are being cut 011 their outer ends.
A further object is to provide means for adjusting the cutters to suit the size of tenon required.
lVith these ends in view my invention consists in various novelties of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is vertical longitudinal section. Fig. 2 is an end elevation, and Fig. 3 is a plan view.
A represents the casting, which constitutes the pedestal or support of the machine. A pair of shafts 3, connected at the rear end by yoke 1, are held loosely in boxes 2 2, wherein they are adapted to slide freely when the hub is shifted. On the outer ends of these shafts the head-stocks 3 3 are rigidly secured, and in boxes 4 4 in the upper ends of these stocks spindles 5 5, which carry the cups 6 6, in which the ends of the hub are held, are adj ustably secured by screws 7 7, or similar devices. These cups not only hold the hubs, but allow them to be turned while the outer ends of the spokes extending from the hub are being operated upon. To shift the shafts longitudinally, a screw 9, having a crank disk orhandle 10 on its outer end, is swiveled in the yoke 1, which connects the rear ends of the shafts, and it extends through a threaded nut 11 in the standard, and by turning this crank or handle the shafts are slid endwise the required distance to bring the outer ends of the spokes into proximity to the cutter-head, which forms the tenons on the spokes.
As a means for holding the ends of the spokes firmly while they are being operated upon by the cutter-head, which forms the tenons on the spokes, a pair of sliding jaws 12 12 are loosely mounted in boxes 13 13, and these jaws have connected with them bellcra'nk levers 1a 14, which, when rocked on their fulcrums 15 15, slide the clamping-jaws. Spiral springs 16 16 are provided for normally sliding the jaws back and to slide them in the opposite direction or toward each otherpor, in other words, to counteract the effect of the springs the foot lever or treadle 17 is connected with the opposite ends of the bellerank levers by means of pitInen-rods 17 By depressing the foot lever or treadle the jaws are slid simultaneously together or against the ends of the spokes which they clamp. The cutter-head 18 is screwed or otherwise held on the outer end of the shaft 19, and the latter is connected by a feather or other means with the hollow shaft 20, in the bore of which it is supported. A hand-lever 21 is connected by a rod 22 with the rear end of this shaft 19, and by swinging this lever the cutter-head is shifted. A pulley 26 is secured on the hollow shaft 20, and this is driven by a belt passing over it from the large belt-wheel 27, and the shaft 28, upon which the latter is located, is driven through the medium of the belt-wheel 29. The usual loose belt-wheel 30 is provided to shift the belt upon when the motion of the machine is stopped.
Various slight alterations may be made in the different parts of my invention without departure from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence I do not desire to limit myself to the exact construction set forth but,
Having fully described. my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secureby Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with a support, a pair of shafts loosely held in boxes on the support, head-stocks rigidly secured on the outer ends of the shafts, and hub-cups held by the headstocks, of a yoke connecting the rear ends of the shafts and a screw swivelcd in this yoke and passing through a nut in the support,
whereby'the shafts are moved endwise by turning the screw, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, With a pair of sliding shafts and means for sliding said shafts, of a pair of huh-cups adj ustably secured on the outer ends of the shafts, and spring-actuated sliding jaws adapted to hold a spoke between them While being operated upon, and means for sliding said jaws.
3. The combination, with a support having sliding clamps therein, of spring-actuated levers fulcrumed on the support and having pivotal connection with the sliding clamps, a foot-'treadle, and pitmen connecting the foottreadle With the levers, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination, with a support, a pair of connected shafts, means for shifting said shafts, head-stocks rigidly secured to the shafts, and hub-cups supported on these headstocks, of sliding clamps, means for sliding them, a rotary cutter-head, and means for shifting the latter endwise, substantially as set forth.
