Description

(No Model.)
B. T. WINKLER.
PRESSURE REGULATOR.
Patented June 24; 1890.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EHREGOTT THEODORE \VINKLER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
PRESSU RE-REGU LATO R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 430,720, dated. June 24, 1890.
Application filed October 18, 1889- erial No. 327,473. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, EHREGOTT THEODORE VVINKLER, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pressure-Regulators; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention is an improved pressure-regulator of that class in which the valve which regulates the flow of the fluid is controlled by the pressure of the fluid on one side of the regulator.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section, Fig. 2 a side elevation, and Fig. 3 a plan View, of the apparatus.
In the drawings, A represents the induction-pipe, and l) the eduction-pipe. These are connected by the valve-chamber O. The
. valve consists of the cylindrical stem, provided with a conical valve and fitted to a corresponding seat. The valve-stem is held in guides in the case, in which it moves freely. On one side it is formed with teeth like a rack-bar. With these teeth engage the teeth of a segmental rack D. This is fixed on a rock-shaft d, which has its bearings in the case. one end extending through the case and being provided with suitable stuffing-boxes. The case in which the segmental rack is located and which contains the valve-stem is hermetically closed excepting as to its connection with the pipes A and B. From the outer end of the shaft cl is a horizontal arme and a vertical arm f. The vertical arm is provided with a coiled spring F, detachably connected to an arm G, and provided with a thumb-nut g, by means of which its tension may be regulated. This spring acting through the segmental rack tends to draw the valve away from its seat, and thus enlarge the opening to the eduction-pipe B. The horizontal arm 6 is connected to a piston h, which works in the cylinder H. This is closed at the upper end, and is connected bya pipe 1', directly or indirectly, with the eduction-pipe B. The pressure, therefore, in the upper part of the cylinder H upon the'piston It tends to force the valve toward its seat and to close the orifice leading to the eduction-pipe, and any in crease in pressure in that pipe tends to lessen the supply of fluid thereto, and the spring being set for any desired amount of pressure, that amount will be maintained by the action of the apparatus. The valve and its stem and the apparatus which directly operates it, being located in the valve-chamber or chambers connected therewith is in equilibrium of pressure and free to operate. In case it becomes desirable to operate the valve by exhaust in the upper part of the cylinder H, I have provided another arm G and made the spring detachable at its upper end, so thatit may be released from the arm G and connected to the arm G. Under this arrangement the apparatus will operate under the reverse conditions above described.
I claim as my invention 1. In combination with the induction and eduction pipes, the valve-chamber connected therewith, the valve connected with the rockshaft located within the chamber, arms 6 f on the rock-shaft,a spring, a piston working in a cylinder, and a connection between said cylinder and the pipe E, substantially as described. I
. 2. In combination with the valve-stem, the
shaft d, connected therewith, the arms and
