To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE PorPEET, of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee, and in the State of Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sliding Window-Blinds; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

My invention relates to sliding windowblinds; and it consists in certain peculiarities of construction, as will be fully setforth hereinafter and subsequently claimed.

In the drawings, Figure l is a front elevation of my present device, partly broken away to better illustrate the construction. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on the line 2 2 ofFig.

My present invention is in part animprovement on the device patented to me .I une lat, 1887, No. 364,955, and, like that, consists, primarily, in a series of weighted or counterbalanced blind-sections moving vertically in a suitable frame or casing, three of such sections being shown in the present instance, but the number, more or less, being immaterial.

A A represent the studding of a windowframe, secured against the brick-Work d and plaster b in any ordinary manner above the sill-piece B, which latter is made removable and. held in place by screws c c, this being a very useful construction, as thereby the sill can be removed at any time and the weights and cords adjusted, changed, or refastened from below, as well as originally to enable the weights to be slipped up and fastened from below, and secured to said studding are the usual strips or guides d e for the window-sashes (the latter being indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2) and the strips f f for concealing the edges of the studding and the plaster, and against the latter strips are 'placed the blind-guides and weight-pockets C, the same preferably consisting of solid grooved-out pieces, such as are shown in Fig. 3, having the weight-pockets g g g on one side and the blind-guides 7L h h on the other side thereof, the weight-pockets being closed by the strips D E, the lower portions E of which `are removable for the purpose of readily getting at the weights and secured in place by screws, as shown, or otherwise, said strips D E being wholly exposed at the sides ot' the Window-casing and hence readily accessible when necessary.

My blinds (of which there are as many sections as there are grooved blind-guides in the pieces C) are secured to cords in the saine manner as in my prior patent hereinbefore referred to, said cords passing over pulleys j and carrying weights or counter-balances K at their free ends, which move up and down in the described pockets g, all as in said prior patent. These blinds slide vertically, and all the sections, except that nearest the room, are preferably made as represented in detail in Fig. -that is, with thejnner edges of the stiles of these blinds J (or the stiles of their solid panels) grooved vertically, as at m, and with sections F of solid pieces horizontally and angularly grooved (forming a closed panel in imitation of closed blind slats) slipped in said grooves, while the blind-section Gr next the room is made with movable slats n n, connected together in the usual way by a blind-refill, and secured to the lower rail o of this blind-section is aplate I, having a short upper horizontal lug or projection p, just large enough to hold the lower end of the blind-rod I-I in place when the slats are closed, as shown in Fig. 4, and below this a longer and wider horizontal projection q, on which the lower end of the said blind-rail I-I rests when it is turned to one side and dropped when the slats are open, as shown in Fig. 1.

The construction shown and described by me of all the weight-pockets at each side of the window-casing being covered by single and readily-removable strips in direct contact with all of the solid wood partitions between my weight-pockets I deem of special value and importance, as thereby each weightpocket is completely isolated from those on each side thereof, and dust and other foreign substances more effectually excluded than could be possible without such individual isolation, while at the same time, by removing a single retaining-strip, each and every weight-pocket of the entire series is instantly I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A window-casing, in combination with inwardly-proj ecting vertically-grooved blindguides and Weight-pockets, a series of vertically-sliding blind-sections, cords attached to the same and passing over pulleys on the frame, With Weights attached to their free ends moving in said pockets, and removable retaining strips, also projecting inwardly from the window-casing, and covering said weight-pockets and in contact with all of the solid Wood partitions between each weightpocket, substantially as set forth.

2. A window-casing, in combination with inwardly-proj ecting vertically-grooved blindguides and Weight-pockets, a series of vertically-sliding counterbalanced blind-sections fitted thereto, inWard]y-projectingg` removable retaining-strips covering` said weight-pockets,

and a removable horizontal window-sill piece below said Weight-pockets and guide-strips, substantially as set forth.

3. The combination, with a blind-section, of a series of movable slats,a rod connecting said slats together, and a plate secured to the lower rail of said blind-section, having a short upper horizontal projection of just sufficient size to hold the blind-rod when the slats are closed, and alonger and Wider lower horizontal projection to hold said rod when the slats are open, substantially as set forth.
