W. V. SNYDER.
TOY.
No. 430.152. Patented June 17, 1890;
WITNESSES:
A NOR/VH5 UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
YVALDO V. SNYDER, OF CANTON, OHIO.
TOY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 430,152, dated June 17, 1890.
Application filed February 1, 1890- Serial No. 338,389. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WALDo V. SNYDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton,in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a view of the propelling shaft, showing the traveling Wheels properly attached. Fig. 3 is view of one of the legs, showing its different parts disconnected. Fig. 4 is a View showing the rear portion of an animal and the manner of attaching the connecting-bars. Fig. 5 is a detached view of a hoof.
The present invention has relation to toys; and it consists in the different parts and combination of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all of the figures of the drawings.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the body of the animal, which in this instance is that of a horse; but it will be understood that a body illustrating any quadruped may be used without departing from the nature of my invention.
To the body A are pivotally attached the legs a and a.
The platform B is provided with the brackets O, which are located substantially as shown in the drawings, and, as shown, carry the shafts to which are attached the wheels I) and b.
The shaft cis provided with the compound crank d, to which crank d are attached the pitmen d. These pitmen d extend up through the slots ein the platform B and are connected to the loops f, which loops are formed in the connecting-wires g. These connecting-wires g are pivotally attached in any convenient and well-known manner to the legs a and a.
For the purpose of causing the right fore leg and the left hind leg to move in the same direction at one time the wires 9 are crossed,
thereby producing the natural movements of the animals legs.
In Fig. 1 the hough-joints are shown removed, or, in other words, the legs formed solid from the hip-joints to the hoof-joints; but, if desired, the hough-joints may be provided, as illustrated in Fig. 4.
To the bottom or lower ends of the legs a and a are pivotally attached the hoofs h, and for the purpose of causing the legs a and a to fall properly the hoofs h are provided with the weights h, as shown in Fig. 5; but it will be understood that in case the toy is large the weights may be dispensed with, as in large toys the legs will be heavy enough within themselves to cause the hoofs to strike or come down upon the platform B.
The body A is supported upon the platform B by means of the posts or standards D, which posts or standards are firmly attached at their bottom or lower ends to the platform B in any convenient and well-known manner, and their top or upper ends securely attached to the body A. The body A is supported at such a height that when the legs ct and a are brought down the bottom of the hoofs h will strike the top of the platform B, thereby representing or producing the sound of a trotting horse or other animal.
It will be seen that as the platform B, together with its different attachments, is propelled rotary motion will be communicated to the shaft 0, provided with the compound crank cl, which in turn communicates reciprocating motion to the pitmen d and the cross-wires g, thereby producing the natural movements of the legs a and a.
It will be seen that wires 9 may be attached without crossing the same, and at the same time produce movements of the legs a and a; but I prefer to cross the wires g, as illustrated in Fig. 1.
It will be seen that the body A may be form ed of sufficient size forachild to ride upon the platform B, together with its different attachments, being formed of a corresponding size and strength.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of the body A, attached to the platform B by the posts or standards D, the platform B, mounted on wheels, the jointed legs a and a, pivotally attached to the body A, the shaft 6, provided with the compound crank d, the pitmen d, and the connecting-Wires g, provided With the loops f, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of the body A, attached to the platform B, the platform B, mounted 011 wheels, the pivoted legs a and a, the crankshaft 0, the pitmen d, the connecting-wires g, and the hoofs h, provided with the Weights h, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
WALDO V. SNYDER.
