PATENT OEEIcE.
WILLIAM HADDON ROBERTSON, OF ALLEGHENY, PENNSYLVANIA.
TYPE-WR|T|NG MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 439,689, dated November 4, 1890.
Application filed October 16, 1883. Serial No. 288,174. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAMHADDON ROB- ERTSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type- Writing Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a fulL clear, and exact specification of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which the figure illustrates a plan view of the keyboard of a type-writer, with a portion of the frame of the machine.
The object of my invention is to provide a useful and convenient arrangement of alphabetical letters, punctuation-marks, and other characters on the key-board of a typewriter; and with this end in view my invention consists of a bank of keys in which the arrangement of. the various letters, numerals, and punctuation-marks is based upon an approximation to the arrangement of the printers case.
The bank of keys is arranged in four series, and the detailed arrangement of the letters, &c., on the keys is as follows: The keys of the first series of the bank contain the following alphabetical letters, punctuation-marks,
and other characters-e. 9., K, 35 2, & 3, 4, (5,) 6, 7, [8,] 9. The keys of the second series of the bank contain the following letters, to wit: J, Z, B, O, D, E, I, S, F, G. The keys of the third series of the bank contain the alphabetical letters and characters X, L, M, N, H, O, Y, P, l, W. The fourth and last series of keys of the bank of keys contains the following letters and characters: Q, V,U,T,A,R,;.,
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
In a type-writer, a bank of keys in which the arrangement is based upon an approximation to the arrangement of a printers case, and consisting of four series, the first ofwhich contains the alphabetical letter K, the ordinals 2 t0 9, inclusive, and the punctuationmarks 85, the second series of keys containing the alphabetical letters J, Z, B, O, D, E, I, S, F, G, the third series of the bank containing the alphabetical letters X, L, M, N, H, O, Y, P, and W, and the fourth series of keys containing the following: Q, V, U, T, A, R, P, as shown.
