I I fl UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ISAAC N. FRANKLIN, OF- CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO HIRAM I. STEVENS, OF SAME PLACE.
CONVERTIBLE BABY-JUMPER AND SWINGING RECEPTACLE.
SPECIFIGATION forming part of Lettegs Patent No. 439,648, dated November 4, 1890.
Application filed June 2, 1890.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISAAC N. FRANKLIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful-Improvement in Convertible Baby-J umpers andSwinging Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an apparatus designed to be used with very young children; and its object is to provide in one apparatus a number of interchangeable parts and devices for assisting a child in learning to walk and giving it exercise in a suspended chair and rocking it in a cradle.
To this end my invention consists in the construction hereinafter described, and then more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings like letters refer to the same parts in the several figures, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the apparatus fitted with a device for assisting the baby to walk. Fig. 2 is avertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same apparatuswith devices in which the child is to be seated and given a jumping exercise. Fig. 4 is a vertical section of the same. Fig. 5 is a vertical section of the apparatus with an elastically-suspended cradle substituted in place of the chair just above mentioned. Figs. 6 and 7 are detailed views, respectively, in front elevation and in section of the devices for detachably connecting the cradle or chair with their suspending devices. Fig. 8 is a detail View in perspective of the garment employed in connection with Figs. 1 and 2 for assisting the child to walk.
The main frame of the apparatus is preferably composed of a series of legs A A, mounted upon rollers, so as to make them readily movable, and having a curve or bow in them below their upper portions to give room for the childs feet and limbs in the process of walking. These legs are connected at their upper ends by a ring B, of any suitable material, and below their centers by a larger ring 0, of similar material. The two rings have fastened to them a series of wires or other suitable latticework, whereby an inclosure is made. Projecting upwardly from the ring 13 are two or more standards D D, which support a dome or can- Serial No. 353,941. (No model.)
opy E for sheltering the child from the sun or weather. The standards D D are suitably braced.
So much of the apparatus as I have described is common to all forms of appliances to be used in connection with this invention, and serves as a base or main frame for the connection of the several interchangeable parts, hereinafter to be described.
In the construction illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings I design to employ a garment F, which is to be buttoned or otherwise secured around the body of the child while it is standing, and by means of cords attached to such garment and connected through a spring I to a cord a, passed over a pulley in the dome and suitably secured to one of the standards, the child is supported in an upright'position with its weight largely sustained, and thus is enabled to begin its infantile stepping with all danger of falling avoided, and the evils resulting from the bearing of its own weight by limbs too weak to sustain it are also avoided. I find it also convenient to use a spreader G between the cords, which are attached to the garment.
In the constructions shown in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawings I substitute a suspended chair for the garment employed in the construction heretofore described. This chair, which I designate by the letter K, is detachably fastened to standards L L by means of screws and key-hole slots or other devices, as plainly shown in Figs. 5, 6, and 7 of the drawings. To the standards L L, at their upper ends, are attached suitable springs M M, which are secured to the dome by a hook and eye or other suitable fastenings. I mounta treadle upon the lower portion of the main frame and connect the same with about the center of the chair by a suitable connecting-rod N. The treadle in all the figures is marked 0. It is obvious that after the child has taken enough walking exercise the walking attachments can be removed and the chair appliances secured to the main apparatus, and then a gentle and pleasing jumping motion can be given to the child by placing it in the chair and operating the latter by the treadle. After the child has had sufficient exercise and is tired a cradle attachment-such as is shown in Fig. 5.-may
be substituted for the chair before mentioned. The suspending standards for the cradle may be the same as were used for the chair, or independent standards and braces may be employed with the cradle. To the forward end of the cradle is secured one end of a cord, which is passed backward around a pulley fastened to the frame and then forward and downward around a second pulley attached to the front of the frame, and, finally, the farther end of the cord is secured to the treadle, which may be the same as was used with the chair attachment. This treadle may be 0perated by foot-power, as its name implies, or by any other suitable motor-such as a clockwork, or a water moto'r, an electric motor, the.
I am well aware that a convertible babyjumper and other device is not broadly new, and I no not wish to be understood as claiming the same; but
What I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. Aconvertible baby-j umper and other appliancc for a child, comprising an inclosing circular frame for its body, from which project vertical standards which in turn carry a dome, and two standards elastically suspended from such dome and detachably secured to a receptacle for the child, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A convertible baby-j umper and other appliance for a child, comprising an inclosing circular frame for its body, from which project vertical standards which in turn carry a dome, two standards elastically suspended from such dome and detachably secured to a receptacle for the child, and a lever connected at one end with'the circular inclosing-frame and intermediately of its ends with said receptacle, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
