COUCH-ROLL FOR PAPER-MAKING MACHINES.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, FREDERICK W. MILLER and JOHN J. NEWMAN, residing at Elkhart, in the county of Elkhart and State of Indiana, have invented a new and Improved Couch- Roll for Paper-Making Machines, of which the following is a specification.

Our invention has for its object to provide a couch-roll for paper-making machines es pecially adapted for more effectually removing water from a web of paper before it passes to the first pressing devices.

Our invention consists in the peculiar combination and novel arrangement of the several parts of the couch-roller, all of which will hereinafter be fully described in the annexed specification, and particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an end View, partly in section, 011 the line 1 1, Fig. 2, of our improved couchroll; and Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section thereof.

In the accompanying drawings, in which the same letters and figures indicate like parts in all the figures, A indicates a stationary shaft, formed with hollow end sections a a by means of the division-plugs a a said ends being formed with ports I) b, which communicate with ports 0 0, formed in hub-sections C 0, attached to the shaft A by the keys 10, top screw-holes 18 being provided, whereby the hubs C may be conveniently drawn out by a suitable screw-top for repairs or any other purpose.

D D indicate j ournal-boxes or disks placed practically air-tight on the shaft A and around the hubs O, on the outer faces of which are formed annular flanges d d, which are connected by a series of longitudinal bars E E, as shown. The hubsections 0 C are held in place by centrally-apertured cap-plates F E, which are bolted to the boxes or disks D by the bolts ff.

G G denote collars or stuffing-boxes, which are slipped over the ends of the shaft A and serve to make air-tight joints and exclude air from journal-boxes D D. Each of the journal-boxes D D is formed with a series of ports 4 4:, which register with the ports 0 c in the hub-sections O C, and to stiffen and strengthen the construction of the roller a journal-bearing H, which is supported on the shaft A, is provided, which is formed with an oil-hole 7:, closed by one of the screws 1, which, and a series of screws J, which pass into the rear edges of the disks D, serve to secure a tubular casing K to the bearing H and the disks D. By this arrangement it will be seen that a continuous channel M M is formed, which connects the end ports 4 4, as most clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings.

N denotes a cover or wrapper disposed around the couch-roll composed of felt, perforated rubber, or any other suitable material through which water can be drawn, and 0 denotes the wet felt belt which carries the pulp about the couch-roll, and P indicates the making-cylinder. Each end of the shaft A is held for adjustment by means of the bearing-studs 8, formed with forked heads in which the ends of the said shaft rest, each of said studs being formed with a depending screw-threaded stem fitting in a regulating bar or nut 19, resting upon the upper end of a stout spring 9, which is supported on a base-piece 20, held over the vat 30. By this construction the roll will be adapted for vertical adjustment and be mounted upon yielding bearings. Each end of the hollow shaft is formed with an external screw-thread to provide for convenient attachment thereto of any of the well-known suction devices, such as water, steam, air pumps, &c.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, the advantages of our improved coucher will be readily understood by those skilled in the art.

It will be seen that as the roll revolves about the shaft the suction devices will draw the water from the wet felt through the porous cover or wrapper and carry the same in the direction of the arrows into the hollow shaft and discharge same through the ends thereof into the suction-pipes.

The roller can be made of various sizes and used on any of the well-known papermaking machines. It may also be used as a revolving suction-box when placed in any suitable position on a paper-machine.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by LettersPatent, is

1. An improved couchroll comprising a shaft having hollow ends adapted to be conneoted with suction devices, journal-boxes mounted on said hollow ends, forming the headsof the roll, ports connecting said heads and hollow shaft, a porous cover, and a channel or chamber intermediate the cover and ports and communicating with said ports, substantially as shown and described.

2. A suction couch roll for paper-making machines, comprising a shaft having hollow ends adapted to be connected with suction dev1ces,journal-boxes mounted thereon to form the heads of the roller, an annular chamber formed about said heads, a porous cover for the roll, and ports connecting said annular chamber and the hollow shaft, substantially as and for the purpose described.

A couch-roll for paper-makin g machines, comprising a shaft hollow at the ends, hubs C, secured thereon, said hubs and the shaft formed with communicating ports, journalboxes D,- mounted on the hub portions and provided with a series of ports registering with the ports in the hubs C, said boxes formed with annular flanges, longitudinal bars connecting said flanges, and a porous wrapper or covering surrounding said bars,

whereby an internal chamber is formed communicating with said ports, the hollow ends of said shaft adapted to be connected with suitable suction devices, substantially as and for the purpose described.

4. The hereinbefore-described improved couch-roll, comprising a shaft provided with hollow ends and openings or ports a a, the hubs C C, secured upon such ends, provided with ports 0, communicating with said ports a, the hubs O C, mounted on said shaft, and the boxes D D, formed with a series of ports registering with the ports in the hubs C C and with annular flanges, the cap-plates, the journal-bearing H, the tubular casing K, fitting over the bearing and the ends of the boxes D, and the longitudinal bars L and the porous co'ver, whereby a longitudinal channel or chamber M is formed connecting the ports of the boxes D, substantially as and for the purpose described.
