Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HERMANN J. MULLER, OF NEV YORK, N. Y.
DESK ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 438,856, dated October 21, 1890.
Application led February 27, 1890. Serial No. 341,918. (No model.)
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMANN J. MULLER, ofthe city, county, and State of New York, a citizen of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Desk Attachments to Piano-Lamps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved attachment to piano-lamps which can be used as a desk for reading purposes or as a music-rack, so as to utilize the light of pianolamps in a convenient manner in addition to the ordinary purposes of the saine.
The invention consists in certain details of construction and combination of parts, as will be fully described hereinafter, and finally pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a side elevation of a piano-lamp with my improved desk attachment, showing it in a position on the standard of the same. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of my improved attachment drawn on a larger scale. Fig. 8 is a plan of the saine, and Fig. 4 is a rear view showing the grooved guide for adjusting the desk on its supporting-arm.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the upright standard of a piano-lamp of any approved construction. To the standard A is applied a clamping-collar B, which is formed of two sections b b', of which the section b is hinged to the section b and tightly applied to the standard A by a clamping-screw b2, which engages lugs b3 at the meeting ends of the sections b b. The section b is provided with a sleeve d, having a clamping-screw d for the purpose of supporting a horizontal adjustable arm C, which carries at its front end a sleeve e, provided with a clamping-screw e for supporting a vertical arm C', at the upper end of ,which is also arranged a sleeve g, having a clamping-screw g for supporting a forked arm D, which is hinged to the back of a desk E.v To the back of the desk E is rigidly attached a semicircular yoke E', that extends at right angles from said desk and passes between the parts of the fork of the arm D. The yoke E is serrated at one side and engaged by a set-screw E2, which passes through an eye in the web of the forked arm D, said set-screw E2 permitting, in connection with the semicircular yoke E', the adjustment of the desk E to any suitable angle of inclination toward the vertical standard A of the lamp. As the horizontal arm O may be adjusted in the sleeve of the collar B, the vertical arm C in the sleeve of the horizontal arm C, and the desk E on the forked arm D, the desk can be adjusted nearer to or farther from the standard A, or higher or lower on the same, as required. By the arcshaped yoke E anda set-screw E2 the inclination of the desk E is readily adj usted on the forked arm D.
The desk E is provided in the usual manner with a projecting ledge at the upper or lower edge and With spring-arms for retaining a book, newspaper, or a sheet of music or other object that is to be supported on the desk E, according as it is desired to used the desk for reading purposes or for supporting music on the same when an instrument is to be played.
The desk attachment may be readily attached to or removed from the standard of the piano-lamp, and forms a neat and convenient device by which the utility of these lamps is augmented.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A desk attachment for a piano-lamp, consisting of an adjustable collar adapted for application to a piano-lamp standard composed of two sections hinged together and provided with ears and a clamping-screw, one of said sections being provided with a sleeve having a set-screw, a horizontal arm adjustable in said sleeve and provided with a Vertical sleeve in its outer end, a vertical arm adjustable in said vertical sleeve and provided with a horizontal sleeve at its upper end, a forked arm supported in the sleeve of the vertical arm,a desk the back of which is pivoted to the forked arm and provided" with a yoke, and a set-screw in said forked E arm for engaging said yoke.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my inventionI have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HERMANN J. MULLER.
