'(No Model.)
E.- S. BROWN. ATTACHMENT FOR STOVES AND RANGES. No. 438,141. Patented Oct. 14, 1890.
UNITED STATES ETI-IAN S. BROWVN, OF PASOO AG, RHODE ISLAND.
ATTACHMENT FOR STOVES AND RANGES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 438,141, dated October 14, 1890.
Application filed July 2, 1890. Serial No. 357,500- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ETHAN S. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pascoag, in the countyof Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Attachment for Stoves and Ranges, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to stoves and furnaces, and more particularly to that class thereof known as stove lids and tops; and the object of the same is to provide an improved attachment applicable to a stove or a range top, whereby the culinary utensils set in the holes thereof may be given a greater or less degree of heat without changing the amount of fire in any way.
To this end the invention consists of the details of construction hereinafter more particularly described, and illustrated in the drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of a stovetop with my improved attachment applied thereto and one griddle removed to show the construction of the same. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of this improved attachment, showing the damper therein as closed.
Fig. 3 is a similar section showing the damper open.
Referring to the said drawings, the letter S designates a stove, upon the open top of which is secured my attachment. The latter comprises a cast-iron box D, having through its top and bottom a number of holes H, each lower hole being surrounded by a ring R, which rises nearly to the top plate of the box, leaving, however, an annular opening 0, as seen in Figs. 2 and 3.
F is the fire-pot, and O the passage leading to the chimney, and my attachment is so located that one of the holes H will stand about over-the fire-pot, as seen.
D is a damper arranged between the rings R of two of the holes and operated by a handle leading to the outside of the stove.
The uses and advantages of this attachment are as follows: The fire being started in the fire-pot and a kettle K being placedin one of the holes, if the damper D be closed, as in Fig. 2, the heat will pass along beneath the bottom of the kettle, as indicated by the arrows. If, however, the damper be opened, as seen in Fig. 3, the heat will pass up the annular space between the kettle and the ring R, through the adjacent sides of the two annular openings 0, beneath the top T, and out the chimney O, as shown by arrows in this figure, therebyimparting heat to a larger area of the kettle,'and also being brought closer against the top T than when the damper was closed.
In order that there may be sufficient space between the kettle K and the ring R, I preferably provide the latter with lugs L at three or more points inside the same, and when the kettle is passed down into the hole H these lugs guide it to the center of the hole, and thereby leave an annular space around the kettle. The upper ends of the lugs L may be beveled, as seen-in Figs. 2 and 3, wherebyt-he kettle will be automatically guided thereby to the center of the hole.
In the drawings I have shown the attachment applied on top of an ordinary stove, with its holes H in alignment with the usual potholes of the stove. In this position it may either be secured by bolts or I may depend on the weight of the box to hold it in place.
What I claim is 1. The herein described attachment for stoves and ranges, the same comprising a metallic box having stove-holes through its top and bottom, rings around said bottom holes rising nearly to the upper plate, and a transverse dam per within the box between the-rings, the whole operating substantially as set forth.
2. The herein-described attachmentto cooking stoves and ranges, adapted to be placed on top of the same and provided with holes through its top and bottom to register with the potholes of the stove, and having rings surroundingits bottom holes and rising nearly to the top of the box and provided with lugs L, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aflixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
. ETHAN S. BROWN. l/Vitnesses:
FRED L. HAMLETT, ELIsHU S. HARRIS.
