SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 437,820, dated October 7, 1890.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANK E. PECK, a citizen of theUnited States, resid in gat East VVareham, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts,haveinvented a new and useful Improvement in Velocipede-lVheels, of which the following, together with the accompanying drawings, is a specification sufiiciently full, clear, and exact to enable persons skilled in the art to which this invention appert-ains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improved construction in that class of cycle or velocipede wheels wherein a train of speed-gearin g is arranged within the hollow hub of the wheel, more especially to the particular kind of mechanism described in a previous application, Serial No. 339,198, the object of my present invention being to so construct and arrange the head of the wheel-hub and the manner of its connection with the cylindrical shell that convenient facility of adjustment is afforded for taking up looseness in the gearing,-
also to afford a method of structure that will permit the case-hardening of the flanges or central part of the head without the peripheral portion thereof, as will be more fully explained.
The particular features of invention claimed are hereinafter definitely specified.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section showing a velocipede-wheel hub and its mechanism with my improvement applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same, and Fig. 3 is an edge view of the adjustable head plate or disk separately.
Referring to parts, A denotes the cylinder or barrel of the wheel-hub, which in accordance with my present invention is provided with a screw-thread at a.
B B indicate the heads or annular disks, on which is formed the flanges 10, whereon the frame is supported by the anti-frictional ball-bearings 9. The head B is made with an annular inner portion 1), on which the flange 10 is formed, and an annular outer portion I), having upon its periphery a screw-thread and case-hardened or tempered to give the proper hardness and wearing quality to the rollway-flange 10, after which the portion 1), of soft steel, is fitted and driven tightly or shrunk onto the periphery of the part b, and then fitted with the peripheral screw-thread to match the threaded end of the cylinder, thereby avoiding any liability of distortion or warping that would take place in the threaded portion if the disk were made integral and subjected entire to the hardening process.
The head-disk, when formed as shown, can be made very accurate in the relation of the screw-threads a and flange 10, so that it can be screwed into the cylinder A more or less without impairing the concentricity of the bearing-surfaces of the flange 10 and framebearing, thus affording adjustment for correcting the wear on the gearing without throwing the several bearings out of precision.
A dog or stop-piece D, fitted to engage with the recessed flange d, is secured to the end of the cylinder A for retaining the disk B at any position of adjustment.
The main axle F, with laterally-projecting axles F its supporting-collars Gr, bearingballs 5, and frame-bosses O, and also the train of beveled gears I, J, K, and L, can be constructed and arranged as shown and described in the previous application for Letters Patent, Serial No. 339,198, or in other suitable manner, and need not be herein more particularly set forth, the construction and arrangement of such parts not being of my invention nor the subject of my present claims.
What I claim as my invention, herein to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
1. The head 13, having the annular rollwayflange 10 and screw-threaded periphery b and the hollow hub-cylinder having screwthreads a engaging said head, in combination with the train of beveled gears disposed within said hub-cylinder, as shown, and the independently supported driving axle, framebearings, and bearing-balls, all substantially as set forth.
2.
