GEORGIA M. SIGSBEE, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
U N DERWAIST.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 436,862, dated September 23, 1890.
Application filed May 29, 1890. Serial No. 353,646. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be itknown that I, GEORGIA M. SIGSBEE, of Boston, in the county of Sufiolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Underwaists; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,
, clear, and exact description of the invention,
such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in underwaists; and it consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a View in rear elevation of my improved garment. Fig. 2 is a transverse section through one of the plaits, and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section through a plait and re-enforce.
Arepresents the body of the garment, made of any suitable material of which garments of this character are usually composed, and it is made in shape to fit the wearers Waist, hips, and neck properly. The garment is reenforced at the back and sides, preferably, by means of the double box-plaits B, O, and D, and these are formed in the usual way, except that the edges of the plait, where they come together in the middle of the plait, are stitched together, as shown at a, and the outer edges are stitched down, as at Z) I). This plaiting extends down to the waist, and from the waist to the lower edge of the garment there are no plaits, but the waist is left full and loose over the hips, so as not to bind at this point and be unpleasant to the wearer. To further re-enforce the garment at the waist, where the other garments are attached to the underwaist, the re-ent'orcing strips D, E, and F, of webbing or other material, are secured.
'These strips are usually placed within the plaits, and the middle one is stitched around the edges, and the buttons 0 c are sewed to the underwaist over these several re-enforcing strips in dilferent numbers, as required. The side strips D and F are made longer than the middle one E, and their lower ends at and f depend to the lower edge of the garment, or slightly below the latter, to form garment-supporters, and they are provided withbuttons f f, button-holes, or equivalent devices, or otherwise arranged for the attachment of garters or straps to hold the stockings. To give increased strength at the sides, where the most sustaining strength is re quired, the plaits are extended to the shoulders or partly around the armholes, so that instead of the stockings being entirely supported from the garment they are supported from the shoulders. The front edges are re-enforced by a double fold, or by means of a strip stitched thereto, and the armholes and edges are bound.
It is evident that slight changes might be resorted to in the form and arrangement of the several parts described without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence I do not wish to limit myself to the exact construction herein set forth; but,
Having fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An underwaist having double box-plaits formed at the back and sides, said side plaits extending around or partly around the armholes, subatantially as set forth.
2. An u'nderwaist composed substantially of a singlepiece of material 'with double boxplaits formed at'the back and sides and secured to the body as far as the waist, with the lower edge free to give over the hips of the wearer, substantially as set forth.
3. An underwaist having double box-plaits formed in the back and sides and re-enforcing strips and garment-supporters secured within the plaits, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGIA M. SIGSBEE.
